Chapter 11
"Can you meet me for dinner tonight?" he asks quietly as he buttons up the light blue dress shirt he just pulled from his closet. "I want to see you tonight."
I adjust the drawstring at the waist of my pants. I pulled my clothes back on after we'd shared a shower after just a few hours of sleep. "I can't tonight. My mom is going back to the center today."
"That's great news." A wide smile races over his lips. "Do you want me to come with you to help get her settled?"
The offers shouldn't feel as misplaced as it does. We haven't delved into the legal intricacies of what happened between my mother and Francesca in the park more than two decades ago but I know that in the eyes of the law, my mother still kept a baby that didn't belong to her.
"I can put in a couple of hours at the office and meet you at the hospital by noon." His hands deftly fasten the black belt he's wearing. "I really want to meet her."
"I need to go to see the police this morning." I scratch the tip of my nose. "I'm meeting Jonah down there at ten."
"I thought we agreed that I'd go with you." He stops mid-motion with a cufflink in his hand. "We talked about that, Vanessa."
He's right. We had discussed it the day Connie gave me the letter. Once I'd had that information in hand, I'd taken the copy of the letter on my phone to Jonah. He read it and felt that it would help my mother's case. He'd rescheduled the meeting with the police for me so I could gather myself together. I was grateful for his understanding then but now, I'm happy to be moving everything forward. I want this cleared up as soon as possible for both my mother's sake and my own.
"I can handle it," I say shakily. "I need to handle it on my own."
"Did you talk to Bethany about it?"
I turn to face him directly. "Why would I do that? Bethany isn't helping me with this. She's only representing my interest in Francesca's will."
"You know that you can't share that letter with the police, Vanessa." He clenches his hands together. "Jonah advised you of that, didn't he?"
My pulse quickens almost immediately. "I'm going to share that letter with the police this morning, Garrett. It's going to help my mother's case."
"You didn't have a legal right to look at the letter when you did," he points out calmly. "If you show it to them now, it may cause problems for your mother in the future."
I don't want to absorb his words as a veiled threat, but that's becoming increasingly more difficult. "I am taking Jonah's advice."
"Jonah isn't aware of all of the circumstances." He taps his foot against the hardwood floor of the bedroom. "You shouldn't have made a copy of that letter. Legally it shouldn’t be in your possession until the will has gone through probate. A judge can dismiss it as evidence if charges are ever brought against your mother.
