The ACLU

For right-wingers, hating the American Civil Liberties Union is like a saliva test—which O’Reilly passes with flying colors.

The ACLU argues that, since its only client is the Bill of Rights, it has no choice but to defend in the interest of free speech the expression of what are often unpopular causes. But that doesn’t wash with O’Reilly. For their defense of groups as disparate as the KKK and NAMBLA, O’Reilly has called the ACLU “the most dangerous organization in the United States of America.”

Using that favorite shorthand of contemporary conservatives, he’s even compared them to Nazis: “Now the ACLU is free to come to your town and sue the heck out of it. And, believe me, that organization will. The ACLU doesn’t care about the law or the Constitution or what the people want. It’s a fascist organization that uses lawyers instead of panzers. It’ll find a way to inflict financial damage on any concern that opposes its secular agenda and it’s growing in power.”

Yet you can count on it: If Bill O’Reilly ever gets in legal trouble for something he says, the ACLU will be the first to defend him, as they did Michael Savage. With enemies like these, who needs friends?
