Thy Neighborâs Husband
Technically, I wasnât breaking the tenth commandment, because I wasnât coveting my neighborâs wife. I was coveting my neighborâs husband, and Moses never said anything against that.
I met Ivy and Bill shortly after they moved into our neighborhood. They had a black lab puppy named Licorice, and I had a white lab named Arnold Ziffel, after the pig on Green Acres. (He was kind of a sloppy eater.) The boys got along well, though Arnold, who was not neutered, had a tendency to want to mount Licorice, who was.
Ivy and I were on similar schedules; we often walked the dogs around the same time each morning and evening, and occasionally weâd stop to chat. One evening a few weeks after the dogs had me, I saw a cute guy walking a black lab that looked like Licorice. Arnold knew better than I did, and he pulled me down the street so he and the black Lab could sniff each other.
âYou must be Bill,â I said, extending my hand. âIâm Marty, and this is Arnold.â
Bill was a little short for me, only about five-seven to my six feet, but still a great-looking guyâshort sandy brown hair, green eyes, a generous smile. He worked out every day, Ivy said, and I could see the evidenceâmeaty chest dusted with hair, ropy biceps, a six-pack, and well-muscled calves.
He shook my hand looked me in the eye. âGood to meet you,â he said. âIâm glad Ivy and Licky are making some friends in the neighborhood.â
I saw him maybe once or twice a week, always in the evening. Weâd take Arnold and Licorice into a grassy place by the side of a canal and let them run. Bill and I talked about the weather, sports, and the dogs. âI envy you single guys,â he said once. âYou get to play the field. If one girl goes off on you, you just move on to the next.â
I nodded noncommittally. How clueless was he? I wasnât a limp-wristed pansy, but I wore skimpy shorts, tight T-shirts with suggestive slogans, and never had much to say in response to his sports questions. Couldnât he tell I was gay?
That didnât stop me lusting after him. Iâd watch him wind up to throw a ball for the dogs and admire the musculature of his arm. Heâd bend over to pick up Licoriceâs poop and a band of white flesh would appear between his shirt and his shorts, and my mouth would go dry.
In early summer I went on vacation, and Ivy agreed to take care of Arnold for me. I said Iâd return the favor the next time she and Bill wanted to go away.
A few weeks later, she asked if Licorice could come stay for a few days while she and Bill went to the beach for vacation. She leaned close to me. âWe havenât been getting along for a while,â she said. âHe saw me naked back in February and told me I was fat, and I havenât been, you know, giving him any until he takes it back.
