Luke could hardly wait to get back to the apartment. If Trevor signed those papers, was he nasty to her? Luke was sure he was. That guy was a jerk. If he hadnât already known it before today, he was sure now.
Luke knocked on the door, almost out of breath when he got there. He could hardly focus on work the rest of the afternoon. Did Trevor sign the papers? He wanted to send Sierra a message, but felt the conversation would be better in person. If Sierra was home, he couldnât wait to pull her into his arms, kiss her sweet lips, and be free to love on her.
When the door opened, Luke was shocked to see Trevor standing there. It had been hours since heâd sent him over. Luke searched behind Trevor for Sierra.
âI thought you told me you werenât screwing my wife.â Trevorâs slow, calculated words as if they were a threat.
Before Luke could respond, he heard Sierra. âHeâs not.â Sierra appeared beside Trevor. She nodded at Luke. âWeâre just friends, right?â
Luke stared at her for a minute. His mind reeling. Wasnât she going to have Trevor sign the divorce papers? Sure, Allison said that she thought Sierra would take him back, but that was before Luke. âYeah,â he said, even though it pained him. âI promised Sierra Iâd put Kennedyâs toy thing together.â
âIâm back now. She doesnât need your help anymore.â Trevorâs eyes rolled over Luke and smirked. âRight?â
Luke looked at Sierra, needing an answer, but her eyes were everywhere except him.
Luke didnât know if he should punch the guy or walk away. What did Sierra need him to do? He couldnât believe that this was true. Sierra wasnât in love with Trevor, she was in love with him.
âThanks for your help. You can go now,â Trevor gazed down at Sierra, âRight, Babe?â
âRight.â Sierraâs word was barely above a whisper. She stared at the hallway behind him. Last night she was going to divorce Trevor as soon as she found him. He was sure of it. What did he say to get her to change her mind?
âWhatâs going on?â Luke asked her. Her eyes darted to him for a second, then she looked away.
âSheâs a married woman, Luke. Find your own.â Trevorâs voice was a warning, but Luke didnât respond to him. He kept his gaze on Sierra.
âCan you not take a hint?â Trevor said. âYou should be thankful Iâm not bashing your face in right now.â
âIâm okay, Luke.â She smiled. Luke wasnât sure if the smile quite reached her eyes, though. How did he change her mind?
Lukeâs heart fell out of him onto the floor. How could she mean what she was saying? Trevor didnât treat her how she needed to be treated.
He swallowed the lump in his throat and said, âOkay, well, if you guys ever need anything, Iâm right across the hall.â
âWe wonât.â Trevor slammed the door.
Luke didnât understand. He didnât understand any of it. He scratched the back of his head. Why? Sheâd been determined.
