Luke could hardly wait to get back to the apartment. If Trevor signed those papers, was he nasty to her? Luke was sure he was. That guy was a jerk. If he hadn’t already known it before today, he was sure now.

Luke knocked on the door, almost out of breath when he got there. He could hardly focus on work the rest of the afternoon. Did Trevor sign the papers? He wanted to send Sierra a message, but felt the conversation would be better in person. If Sierra was home, he couldn’t wait to pull her into his arms, kiss her sweet lips, and be free to love on her.

When the door opened, Luke was shocked to see Trevor standing there. It had been hours since he’d sent him over. Luke searched behind Trevor for Sierra.

“I thought you told me you weren’t screwing my wife.” Trevor’s slow, calculated words as if they were a threat.

Before Luke could respond, he heard Sierra. “He’s not.” Sierra appeared beside Trevor. She nodded at Luke. “We’re just friends, right?”

Luke stared at her for a minute. His mind reeling. Wasn’t she going to have Trevor sign the divorce papers? Sure, Allison said that she thought Sierra would take him back, but that was before Luke. “Yeah,” he said, even though it pained him. “I promised Sierra I’d put Kennedy’s toy thing together.”

“I’m back now. She doesn’t need your help anymore.” Trevor’s eyes rolled over Luke and smirked. “Right?”

Luke looked at Sierra, needing an answer, but her eyes were everywhere except him.

Luke didn’t know if he should punch the guy or walk away. What did Sierra need him to do? He couldn’t believe that this was true. Sierra wasn’t in love with Trevor, she was in love with him.

“Thanks for your help. You can go now,” Trevor gazed down at Sierra, “Right, Babe?”

“Right.” Sierra’s word was barely above a whisper. She stared at the hallway behind him. Last night she was going to divorce Trevor as soon as she found him. He was sure of it. What did he say to get her to change her mind?

“What’s going on?” Luke asked her. Her eyes darted to him for a second, then she looked away.

“She’s a married woman, Luke. Find your own.” Trevor’s voice was a warning, but Luke didn’t respond to him. He kept his gaze on Sierra.

“Can you not take a hint?” Trevor said. “You should be thankful I’m not bashing your face in right now.”

“I’m okay, Luke.” She smiled. Luke wasn’t sure if the smile quite reached her eyes, though. How did he change her mind?

Luke’s heart fell out of him onto the floor. How could she mean what she was saying? Trevor didn’t treat her how she needed to be treated.

He swallowed the lump in his throat and said, “Okay, well, if you guys ever need anything, I’m right across the hall.”

“We won’t.” Trevor slammed the door.

Luke didn’t understand. He didn’t understand any of it. He scratched the back of his head. Why? She’d been determined.
