Chapter Nine
Monty
âDo you wanna check me for anal probes?â I asked Quinn bright and early Monday morning.
âHuh?â He stopped in front of me, coffee in hand, and stared at me like I had three heads. âOh, right. The alien abduction thing.â He came to stand beside me against the brick wall overlooking the courtyard where students were beginning to arrive. âNo inspection necessary. Youâre back to your annoying self. I know itâs you.â
âBut what if Iâm probed?â
âTough shit.â Quinn sipped his coffee. I caught the slight curving of his mouth, though.
âYou look very⦠nerdy today,â I said, nodding to his clothes. He was wearing a long-sleeved collared shirt tucked into tan pants, and he even had a tie.
âAnd you look like a meathead jock.â Another sip of coffee.
âSomeoneâs snippy this morning.â
He peered over at me, his lips twitching. âIâm snippy every morning, and yet, you still insist on pestering me.â
âItâs one of my many talents.â
âAlong with your psychic food-reading abilities?â he asked.
âOf course. Iâm a real catch, Specks. Best not forget it.â
âOh, believe me, Montgomery,â he said, sighing. âI couldnât forget you if I tried.â
âIs that a good thing?â
âHardly.â
âMorninâ, Coach Adams!â Dean called from a few feet away. Then he smiled at Quinn. âMr. Beck.â
âHey, Dean,â I said. âHope you rested this weekend. That was one heck of a game Friday night.â
The kid had a great future ahead of him. Iâd even received word that scouts would be coming to the next game to see him play. Iâd be lying if I said a tiny part of me wasnât a bit jealous of Dean. Once upon a time, Iâd been in his shoes. Talented, dedicated to the game, and having several schools looking at me.
My dream had been taken from me, but Iâd do all I could to make sure his wouldnât be.
âYeah, I rested,â Dean responded. âIâm excited for practice today. My dadâs gonna come watch. Is that cool?â
Deanâs dad hadnât attended any of the games yet this season. Each time before the boys went onto the field for the coin toss before a game, Iâd catch Dean searching the stands, only to look away with one of the saddest expressions Iâd ever seen.
âYep. Fine with me.â
âAwesome!â Dean beamed at me before spotting Trent and Gunner and jogging off to pounce on them. Literally. He ran up behind them and jumped on their backs.
Thatâs when I noticed Quinn staring at me with a puzzled expression.
âWhat?â I asked.
âYouâre just⦠unexpected.â Quinnâs voice lacked the hard edge he normally used with me. âYouâre really good with kids. Given that you used to bully people, Iâm surprised. When I first heard you were a teacher, I couldnât fathom how someone as horrible as you would ever be allowed around students⦠but you proved me wrong.â
âIs that a compliment?â
âDonât get a big head,â he muttered, reverting back to a hard tone. But his green eyes remained soft.
âYouâre the one with a big head,â I whispered, wiggling my eyebrows. âMy ass is still aching from Saturday night.
