Chapter 26
Sara woke me up the next morning in a panic. My first thought is that it must be roach-related.
âBry, get up, get up,â she shakes me. âIâve been awake for hours, waiting to talk.â
âYeah yeah yeah okay, give me a second, Baby,â I croak. My back is stiff and achy from sleeping on the floor. âWhatâs on your mind?â I ask.
âWhatâs on my mind is how are we going to buy stuff to make this place even halfway decent? We need absolutely everything Bry, and we donât have a pot to piss in!â
âA pot to piss in?â I question her. âWho are you, my grandfather?â
âWhatever Mr. Toot Sweet, my Dad says it all the time, who cares? Iâm worried about the money, thatâs the point!â
âOkay, okay,â I say, wiping the sleep out of my eyes. âJust relax, Iâll take care of it. Canât we just wake up a little more mellow yellow and give it a few before we jump right into these serious conversations?â I ask.
âI know, Iâm sorry,â she cringes, âIâm just super wound up I guess, and I have to get it out.â
âItâs okay, I just donât worry that much. You should try to take it as it comes. Worrying doesnât help.â Meanwhile, Iâve been stressing about our money pie every time we cut into it. âListen, I have a surprise that will make you happy. Iâve been holding out on you,â I grin.
âOh, you have, have you?â
âMy Dad was feeling generous and even though he told me not to ask for anything, he ponied up his Sears credit card and told me we could dent it for five hundred bucks!â
I opened the envelope last night. The card came with a note from Dad reading, âI love you, Bry! Let us know if you need anything else.â Aww, thanks, Dad! My Scrooge of a father is turning over a new leaf.
Sara lit up. âThat is awesome, so awesome. Your Dad came through big time!â
âHe really did. Letâs make a list of what to get and then hit it hard. Maybe Iâll buy some Tough Skins for work,â I joke, referring to Searsâ brand of nerdy jeans.
The main thing we need is a bed, also a phone, and a phone book. We may as well have just dropped in here by parachute and donât know a thing about this place besides the basics in the Frommerâs guide. People on vacation donât care where the phone company is.
âTime to find the library. We need to edjumacate ourselves on this place,â I laugh, imitating a comedian we watched on TV (how I miss thee) not too long ago.
The news of the Sears card soothes Saraâs worries for the moment. I canât wait to see whatâs on her mind tomorrow morning. Before heading to the shower, Sara brings me a can of Diet Coke from the fridge, while I stand against the rail of the lanai gazing down upon our new neighborhood. Why am I feeling guilty over stealing a
