om followed the lawman into his office where he swore him in as a deputy. Tom was presented a badge and then helped the sheriff to gather more badges, unlock the gun cabinet and be ready when the rest of the men arrived. Soon there was a bit of commotion out in the street. Tom looked and noticed what appeared to be every able body man in town. To include, as Tom noticed, Cody’s ranch hands that had driven the cattle out from the ranch. They were grouped together off to the side of the main body of men.

“Marshal, do ya want me to go out and speak to these men?” Tom asked.

“Not just yet but grab up some of these rifles and lean them up by the door there,” was the reply.

The sound of the gathered men steadily grew to a small roar. Tom gathered up rifles and leaned them by the door, as he turned to gather more he heard one general consensus, what in the blue blazes had just happened in their town? As Tom was taking the last armload of rifles to the stack the marshal grabbed his arm and stopped him.

The kind of calm that said he was not going to be fazed by what could, and probably would happen. The sheriff gathered up the half dozen stars he had and they went out onto the boardwalk. As they stepped out onto the boards, everybody that saw them come out stopped talking. Those that had not followed suit and quieted down. All with anticipation of what was to come.

“You folks listen!” the lawman exclaimed in a loud booming voice. “As you probably heard, the reason that you are gathered here waiting on us is that we had a couple of killings this morning. One was a good friend to all of us, Cody Dunn. This is Tom Dufran and he has been chasing down the man that has done this. Tom it’s all yours, go ahead.”

He stepped back as Tom stepped forward. All eyes locked on him intent on hearing this stranger behind the star. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the dodger he was carrying there.

“I
