Kwang-ho sucked in a breath as he watched the torn body of his commander tumble to the ground. Though death was something every commando faced, it was not a topic Kwang-ho had spent much time considering. For one, he was young, and with youth came a feeling of invincibility. For another, Min-jun and Chi-won were his team leader and team sergeant. Even among the storied ranks of the KPASOF, these two operatives were legends. Both men had worked operationally in the south and returned unscathed. Even if he’d been afforded the opportunity to pick his leaders, Kwan-ho wouldn’t have chosen different men.

But that had been before.

Before the seriousness and brutality of this operation had been revealed in a gritty, undeniable fashion. First there had been Gi-ung during the tumultuous exit from the minisub. Then Chi-won had fallen in the skirmish with the gangsters. Now Min-jun to the puppet police.

Only Kwang-ho remained.

It was not the ending Kwang-ho had envisioned when he’d boarded the minisub, but it was an honorable one all the same. The cost had been high, but the operation was a success. Min-jun had drawn the harbor police’s focus long enough for Kwang-ho to slip out of the car. He’d slithered between cargo containers, losing himself in the maze until he was certain he wasn’t being pursued. At first he’d thought to remain hidden among the rusting hulks of steel. Then pride had decreed otherwise. What if the abundance of metal interfered with the signal or prevented him from achieving a clear line of sight to the orbiting communications satellite?

Too many had sacrificed far too much for Kwang-ho to rely on luck now.

With a bit of a struggle, he’d climbed up a cargo container, positioning himself on the broad, flat top. From this perch he’d activated the device precisely on schedule while witnessing Min-jun’s final sacrifice.

Then he’d watched.

Though the commandos had been given secondary targets, Kwang-ho knew his ability to prosecute them as a single shooter was limited. His Type 88-2 rifle was still strapped to his back, but without other team members to serve as spotters, security, or additional shooters, Kwang-ho wouldn’t be participating in any complex ambushes. When the attack against the harbor was complete, he would attempt to contact another sleeper cell for instructions. Barring that, he would act as a saboteur and troublemaker, creating chaos wherever possible until he was either killed or reunited with his countrymen when the Korean People’s Army victoriously marched through Seoul.

Such was the life of a commando.

But as Kwang-ho tucked against the metal’s cold, unforgiving surface to watch the fruit of his labors, he was confronted by something unthinkable.

Failure.

Failure in the form of a tiny helicopter.

At first Kwang-ho had thought that the pilots would simply land next to the device. He’d chuckled, relishing what would come next. But they hadn’t. Instead, the aviators hovered above the dispenser, blowing the lethal fumes out to sea even as a pair of shooters tried to displace the box.

This would not do.

Without considering the repercussions, Kwang-ho unslung his rifle and sighted along its narrow barrel.
