‘It is such a shame that Lady Kirkwynd is leaving us so soon,’ Aunt Adelia declared. ‘If you can say nothing else about her, she is entertaining.’

Ginny had come down to breakfast early at Aunt Adelia’s request. Now here she sat between the Dowager and her aunt, nibbling toast and getting an odd feeling that the three of them sharing such an early meal was not by chance.

Not that she minded getting up early—she preferred it, in fact. The fresh, sweet scents of morning, sunshine streaming over the fells along with the twitter of happy birds. It was the best time of day.

It had not escaped her notice that Will was also an early riser. She would not admit this to anyone, especially her breakfast companions, but she rose early enough each day to watch him while he went about his early morning business. From what she had learned, he began his day by spending a few moments on the dock, gazing out at the lake.

She wondered if he was giving thanks for being allowed to live on this beautiful estate.

It was what she would do if she lived here. Perhaps she would even join Will at the edge of the dock.

Of course, if she lived here it would be because she was Phillip Talton’s wife and would begin her day with him.

For a moment she forgot to chew. The piece of toast she had been nibbling dropped out of her fingers and on to her plate.

Was this something she could even do? Wed one man while she woke each morning looking for his brother to walk past her chamber window?

Thought of in that way, she would be committing a great sin!

Clearly her feelings for William Talton were complicated. He was her friend...but could he be more? Did she even want him to be more, possibly risk changing what was already between them?

Their friendship was what she cherished. Deeply cherished. Would wedding Phillip change that friendship? Her heart would break if it did.

It only stood to reason that marriage would change something. Her loyalties would naturally shift from Will to her husband.

There was every chance she was worrying about it for no reason since it was unlikely that she would be Phillip’s choice anyway.

After all, there were several ladies here who would make an excellent countess.

In all likelihood she would be going home next week, an event which would also alter her friendship with Will.

The thought of going back to life as it was before coming to Hawkwood made her feel quite blue.

Back then she had missed the memory of the boy she spent the day with. Now that she had come to know the man...well, she would be beyond blue.

How interesting that it was not the idea of missing Phillip that first hit her. Although, she would. He was a likeable man...a fine man.

‘I shall miss the drama which accompanied her.’ The Dowager’s thin lips twitched at the corners. ‘But when a letter calls one home...home one must go.
