Samantha saw the Goat Man and the bloated man sprint faster than any biped should run. There was no way the Cougar could outrace them. "Hold on!"
She braced herself, grabbing hold of the seatbelt with one hand and the dash with the other. Lou managed to snap the seatbelt buckle over her lap an instant before the Goat Man leveled its horns against the trunk.
Their heads snapped back as the Cougar lurched forward, the back end swerving left and right as Tina fought for control.
"Godammit!" Tina shouted, trying to keep the old Cougar from slamming into the parked cars on either side of the road.
Samantha, who hadn't been inside a church in more than a decade, wondered if her friend should be using the Lord's name in vain. She remembered from her days in Sunday school that that was one of the big no-nos. What was right behind them was clearly something dreamed up in hell. They didn't need to piss off the other side of this equation.
The back tires popped, the percussion loud enough to make all three girls scream as if they'd been shot. Metal grinded on asphalt as Tina willed the junker to keep going.
Problem was, the Cougar had given them all it had left. The engine made a high keening sound, like Freddy Krueger scraping his claws over a metal pipe, and simply died. Lou pushed against Samantha's seat, desperate to get out.
The Goat Man drove its fists into the trunk, crumpling the metal as if it were made of aluminum foil. The car tilted backward, tossing Tina, Samantha and Lou around, before settling back down with a jaw breaking bounce.
Staying in the car was not an option. Samantha and Tina threw their doors open and scrambled out. Lou knocked into Samantha in her panic.
The Goat Man leaped onto the car, galloping over its busted hulk. The red man followed suit, though he was much less frightening to look at. In fact, he resembled a fat lobster, one that had been overcooked in the microwave and was about to pop.
Samantha knew there was no way they could get away from the two beasts while on foot.
Despite Tina and Lou yanking on her arms, she stayed her ground, bravely looking into the Goat Man's burning eyes. Its nostrils flared and smoke curled out of the twin pits. It stopped its advance, remaining on the now crumpled hood.
"Why are you doing this to us?" Samantha asked it in not her most confident tone.
"We have to run," Tina said.
"Are you out of your freaking mind?" Lou said.
Samantha remained resolute. "No. You're out of your mind if you think we can outrun them."
The Goat Man looked down at her, studying her. Samantha felt as if she were being flayed open.
And just like before, it said in its gravely voice, "Sâ¦Sambeebay?"
In that instant, she knew.
Only one person in this world called her Beebay. Just as she was the only person who lovingly referred to him as BearJay.
"Jason?"
The Goat Man rocked on its heels.
