Chapter 15

Dazed and groggy, Rafe struggled to make sense of the earsplitting noise wrenching him from his dreams.

It was Kowalski banging on the bars.

“Wake up! You’re sprung.”

He rubbed his eyes, trying to clear the remnants of the vivid images swirling in his mind. “I’m what?”

“You’ve been released. And no, I don’t know why. Get your ass up, and I’ll take you upstairs to be processed.”

Janet had done it! He eased his head up and waited to see if the dizziness was gone. So far so good.

“Move it, Sleeping Beauty. I ain’t got all day.”

With careful movements, Rafe got out of bed. He seemed stable, just cold. Very cold. He was shaking as he staggered toward the door, his vision blurring in and out.

The cop’s eyes narrowed. “You sick or something?”

“No, I’m fine.” God forbid they made him wait for a doctor to check him out. “Just a little hung over.”

“Well, sleep it off somewhere else.” He unlocked the cell door, took Rafe by the elbow, and retraced the route to the processing area.

Rafe had to wait in line to sign for his belongings and then to change into his street clothes. The whole time, his pulse was pounding, and his face was sheened with cold, clammy sweat. What if another alpha cop smelled him? What if Grant showed up? What if his vision, which was iffy, shut down so he couldn’t walk out of the place on his own?

By the time he cleared the last bureaucratic hurdle, his chest had tightened, and breathing was limited to shallow pants. He hurried out the front door and paused on the steps, fighting to suck in air.

Focusing hard on his watch, he could make out it was almost two o’clock. Perfect. Janet would be at the bus terminal by three. He had an hour to get there. But how? He was shaking so much, he needed to take a cab. But a cab could be traced. On the other hand, if he walked, he’d be spewing omega hormones far and wide to anyone on the street.

Why couldn’t he figure out which was right? In any case, he was sure to attract attention if he stood in front of the police station any longer. He walked in the direction of the bus terminal. A slow, wobbly gait was the best he could manage, and he kept his eyes on the sidewalk so he wouldn’t trip. After a while, he looked up and didn’t recognize where he was. Shit. He must be worse off than he thought. He managed to get to the curb, wrapped one arm around a lamppost, and flagged down a taxi.

Sliding clumsily into the back seat, he sighed in gratitude despite the stab of blaring country music. “Bus terminal, please.”

The driver frowned and said, “You’re not gonna puke in my cab, are you?”

Rafe tucked his trembling hands into his pockets and summoned the most reassuring expression he could manufacture. “Oh, no. I’m fine.” Stretching his false smile wide, no doubt making him look mentally deficient, he urged, “Could we go, please? I don’t want to miss my bus.
