Immediately being made aware of the accident, deeply concerned, Edmund rode back, approaching Marietta’s crumpled figure on the ground. Flinging himself off his horse, he fell to his knees beside her, looking at her tranquil face. Her head had fallen back and her eyes were closed. Her face held a deathly pallor. He was stricken. His world turned to ashes.

Dear merciful God, he prayed with quiet desperation, remembering Francine’s husband and how he had fallen from his horse and it had proved fatal. Let her be all right. Please God.

‘How is she?’ he asked of one of the male riders who had been first on the scene, unaware that Francine had drawn back.

‘It’s difficult to assess the damage.’

Edmund ran gentle hands over the prone limbs to determine any obvious injuries. There seemed to be none. There was blood on her forehead and her eyes were still closed. Clearly she had hit her head when she had been thrown. He grimaced. If the wound had been caused by the horse’s hoof, then matters might indeed be serious. But however life-threatening her injuries, they could do nothing for Marietta here.

‘We’ll get her to the house.’ He looked at Thomas who had galloped over. ‘Get Dr Jenkinson, Thomas, and for God’s sake tell him to hurry.’
