As if I didn’t have enough violence in my life, I went to see a lot of football as well. I saw most of England’s matches around this time.*30 I used to go to the home internationals at Wembley. These were played between England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales and, as can be imagined, they were fiercely contested both on and off the pitch. Through trial and error, I realised that if you managed to get to the front of the upper tier at Wembley Stadium, there was a ten foot drop to the lower level so you could have an unimpeded view of the pitch and also any scraps happening in the lower tier. There was a tremendous amount of fighting in the crowd. I once watched in wonder but also complete safety as the most amazing punch-up between England and Wales fans unfolded directly beneath where I was standing. A man was punched in the face. It was like they’d arranged a fight just for my entertainment.*31
