Father Simon looked around as Cid and he walked through the buildings. He saw a few troubled corporeals but nothing paranormal. He walked over to where one man was trying his best to work with PVC pipes while his hands shook from the DTs. Father Simon laid a hand on the man’s shoulder and said, “God sees your struggle and will send his angels to help keep your resolve strong.”

“Thank you, Father. I’m going to my meetings, but my body is going through withdrawal.”

“Maybe when your shift ends, go over and talk to the doctor at the clinic. I’ll stop there and make sure he makes time.”

“Tell him Robert English will be there at three.”

“I will do so.”

“Thank you, Father.”

Cid liked how at ease the young priest was with the people he talked to. Seeing him outside of Father Santos’s shadow was a revelation. Father Simon didn’t appear to be a stern man, but Cid could tell that he had a will of iron.

When they exited the last of the buildings, Father Simon stopped.

“What’s the matter?” Cid asked.

“I feel like we’re being watched.” The priest turned and pointed. “Two entities are looking down at us from the attic of the mansion.”

Cid looked over but didn’t expect to see anything. He did, however, hear the slight sound of cracking ice. He looked above him and pulled the father away from the building.

A mammoth-sized icicle dropped at their feet. They both looked up to see the multitude of other icicles attached to the eaves of the old building.

“We need to warn them that those should be seen to,” Father Simon said calmly.

“It wasn’t an accident. I heard the ice cracking.”

“I know, Cid.”

“I can’t prove it, but I think it’s the clerks. They are two older boys who the ghosts in the attic seem afraid of. When one of them had ahold of me, I smelled rot. I do believe, if Kiki and Jesse hadn’t acted when they had, I’d be seriously injured.”

“I believe what you’re telling me. I just can’t see clearly their motivation for attacking either one of us. It would help if you could find out their names.”

“We’re working on some leads,” he assured the priest.
