Up on the roof Azul felt the train begin to slow. He rose to his knees. Ahead he saw Naza lift the Winchester twice, indicating the presence of the horses. He lifted an arm in reply and crawled to the end of the car.

He swung down on to the observation platform and jumped across to the brake van. Gently, he tested the lock: the door was shut tight. He reached up to grasp the side-mounted ladder and climbed on to the roof. The train went on slowing as he ran along the swaying caboose to the rear end.

He climbed down and tested the door. It was unlocked.

He eased back the hammer of his Colt and kicked the door inwards.

Someone shouted and he felt the sting of shotgun pellets against his left arm and cheek. He fired blind and heard a man scream in anger.

Then there was the dull explosion of a handgun and he felt a terrific blow slam into his stomach. He doubled over, fighting the pain, but his feet skidded off the platform and he felt the wooden floor ram against his face.

He tasted blood in his mouth, then felt his feet hit the sleepers and begin to bounce. He fought to hold his grip on the rail, but the movement of the train was too much and his fingers slipped loose. He felt himself fall with that slowing of time that comes when the body senses danger and pumps adrenalin into the bloodstream so that objective time becomes a tortoise-movement compared to the acceleration of subjective activity.

He saw the train go away in front of him, then cartwheeled, watching his legs arc high across the sky. He felt the sleepers slam against his shoulders, his arms come down on to the rails. The world spun round as he rolled behind the departing train and he thought about how close he had come to getting Nolan.

Then his rolling movement stopped and his head slammed hard against a sleeper.

Light exploded with incandescent fury across his eyes and the world went dark and dead.
