Jealousy
Like most teenagers, I started to act up, rebel and push the boundaries with authority figures. The problem was all of the authority figures in my life were professional criminals, and the rules they taught me to follow had consequences if I didn’t follow them. These consequences were very different from other teenagers whose parents might punish them with being grounded for a short time or take away their car keys for a week. The rules I lived under were non-negotiable, and I needed a couple good lessons to help drive this point home. Both of the lessons involved my first experiences with women.
The first lesson had to do with some of my first expanded responsibilities that came after a while of working at Johnny’s bar. When Johnny would go on vacation, I was in charge of the bar. I opened and closed it, oversaw ordering of supplies, took the phone calls for gambling bets, sold drugs under the counter, and managed the cash. I was barely old enough to drive, but the bartender along with the waitresses, all of whom were in their late twenties, answered to me in the absence of Johnny.
There was this girl who came in the bar regularly late at night. I knew she dated Johnny a few times, but so did a lot of the women who came in the bar. She wasn’t Johnny’s girlfriend or anything.
I had some confidence at this point, and I asked her out on a few dates. We had some fun together, and that was it. A few weeks later, I was at a bar down the street from Johnny’s when Schnaze sat next to me.

SCHNAZE: Johnny needs to see you.
CARLO: When?
SCHNAZE: Now.
CARLO: Do you know what this is about?
SCHNAZE: I don’t know, but why don’t you order a shot of tequila? I’ll have one with you.
CARLO: Ok.
SCHNAZE: Bottoms up.
CARLO: Bottoms up.
SCHNAZE: Order one more, and then let’s go.

Alarm bells went off in my head.
How many times in the past was I the messenger for Johnny going to get someone who needed to be taught a lesson?
Schnaze and I shared a third shot and left.
Johnny’s bar was shaped as a long rectangle with a narrow front and long walk inside to the rear exit of the bar. What was peculiar on this day was the front door to the bar was propped open along with the rear exit door, so that when I stood outside the bar on the sidewalk and looked inside, I could see straight through to the back courtyard with Flanagan seated under a tree at a table holding a glass of wine. Schnaze said my meeting with Johnny was in the courtyard. I couldn’t spot Johnny anywhere as I stood in the bar entrance.
I walked through the front door, and, like they always do, I saw guys inside the bar playing cards at different tables. I gave a wave at the bartender, and he waved back.
