Clair listened to The Weather Channel Kris watched as she made out a list of what they needed for the party. She wasnât used to entertaining and was kind of into it. Since this was her first party, she wanted everything perfect. She smiled, listening to Kris and Pike complain about the A&M Transport and how it was the worst company Kris had ever worked for â everything from broken trucks to broken owners.
Clair was amused by the stories they swapped. Pike was around ten at the time. Clair was impressed by how much he remembered. She stood up, carrying over her list. âSo what is your earliest childhood memory?â
He tilted his head. âI remember feeling sick, and I was going to puke, and we didnât have anything, so Dad handed me the urinal.â
Clairâs hands shot up, covering her mouth as she laughed. âYeah, Mom was horrified. I think that prompted the Agawam house.â Kris stopped watching the news. âYou were three? You remember that?â
âYeah. She scrubbed my mouth so hard and brushed my teeth for ten minutes. I will never forget that. My mouth hurt for the rest of the day.â
âOn that note, letâs show your dad around. I have to pick up a few things.â It was the perfect segue to offering to drive Kris around for a quick tour of the area. Maybe seeing what was around here would soften him up.
Pikes relaxed his shoulders, dropping them back down to where they should be resting. Why was he so intense when he was talking with his father? Kris turned off the television and stood. âYou can show me around, but donât think itâs going to replace that hidden gem in Virginia.â
They hopped in her Jeep. Pike glanced inside his car at the bags of clothes Jackie had brought. Clair saw him staring as she watched in her rearview. âHey.â
Pike turned, giving her his attention in her mirror. âIâll take care of those if you want me to.â
He nodded. âThanks.â
Driving around Fayetteville was not the same adventure for Kris as was impressing Pike. He could picture himself settling here. Kris commented again that he was hoping Pike would settle in Virginia. Clair, once again breaking the tension that was building, asked, âWhat part of Florida are you in?â
He nodded. âNine hours with stops.â
âOh, so you are in the nine-hour part?â
Kris chuckled. âYes.â
Clair spun his game. âWell, lucky you. Itâs only a dayâs drive to here. Virginia adds a few more hours and then the whole day is gone.â
Kris narrowed his eyes at her. âOh, you are a slippery one.â
They pulled in the parking lot to the store. Without another word, Pike volunteered to go in and gather the things on the list. This would give Clair some private time to talk with Kris. She handed Pike the list. âStick to the list.â
He nodded. âYes, She Who Must Be Obeyed.â
Clair chuckled. âI like that.â
Kris watched Pike grinning as he turned and walked away. That was how he referred to Kim behind her back.
