Chapter Seventeen
Nightfall made Twyla more anxious than usual. It probably had something to do with the weird things that seemed to happen around her fae visitors. Despite the fact that it was only spring, still too early for lightning bugs, her backyard was awash in their gentle glow. Hundreds, if not thousands, of the little yellow-bottomed bugs zipped around behind the house. The effect was eerie, but somehow enchanting.
âWhy canât we go out and catch lightning bugs?â Ivey crossed her arms and pushed out her bottom lip. Her blonde hair was still wet from her bath. Twyla twisted it neatly between her fingers as she braided it into a simple braid.
âYou know why. We canât be bothering our visitors out there.â She snapped the ponytail holder into place at the end of the braid and sighed. âWhy donât you and Bradley watch a movie until you fall asleep?â
âWeâve seen âem all.â Ivey let out an exaggerated sigh. âCanât we just go out on the front porch?â
Twyla narrowed her eyes. âNo, maâam. Why are you being so hard-headed this evening, Ivey? And why are you ignoring Bradley? Heâs our guest.â
The boy looked up from the cartoon he was watching and smiled at Twyla, but he didnât say anything. She thought he looked tired. Maybe having vampires for caregivers had caused him to have a few too many late nights.
âI wouldnât be ânoring him if youâd let us go outside.â
Twyla rolled her eyes at her daughterâs logic. She didnât have the energy or inclination to argue with the child anymore. Sheâd just have to threaten to send her to her room if she didnât settle down and behave.
She started to open her mouth to issue the threat when a knock at the door stole her attention. Ivey leaped to her feet.
âWho is it? Is it Napoleon?â Ivey ran to the window. âOh. Itâs just Hank.â
âIvey,â Twyla hissed, âgo and sit down!â
The child sulked back over to the couch. âFine.â
Twyla pulled the door open without confirming that it was, indeed, Hank outside. She barely refrained from throwing her arms around him. She tried not to get too physical with him in front of Ivey. Twyla wasnât entirely sure that her daughter was ready for Twyla to get serious with anyone, even Hank.
âI sure am glad to see you.â She pulled him into the house by the sleeve of his jacket.
Hank peered around into the living room. âEvening, Miss Ivey, Bradley.â
The children mumbled their greetings and turned their attention back to Spongebob and his underwater antics.
âIveyâs been driving me crazy this evening. She is too curious about the visitors we have out in the backyard and Iâm worried that sheâll get out there and somehow get tricked into going back with them.â
Hank narrowed his eyes. âSurely even the Queen isnât crazy enough to try something like taking your daughter. What has Ivey said about Virgie being back? I mean, it must have been pretty traumatic seeing her after what happened back on Samhain.â
Twyla chewed her bottom lip.
