John awoke from dreamless sleep to the feel of fingers carefully combing through his hair. His head was still pillowed on Robert’s chest and he could hear the strong steady heartbeat that had lulled him to sleep. John decided he didn’t want to move ever again. Not even if the room was burning down around him. He was warm and pressed against Robert’s body and his poet’s mind could think of no finer description of heaven.

Robert’s chest expanded beneath him then contracted into a long sigh.

“What are you thinking about?” John mumbled, his eyes still closed.

“I was thinking that it is Christmas morning and I am looking at God’s finest work bathed in the first light of dawn.”

“You’re stepping on my territory again,” John tried to grumble even as he felt himself blush. It was something Robert had always liked to do; whisper little from-nowhere compliments and naughty ideas until John’s cheeks burned and Robert was chuckling low. It was something that had been missing from the forcibly sterile letters.

“For some reason I think you’ll forgive me,” Robert breathed softly ruffling John’s hair.

“Just this once.” John pushed himself up a bit so he could look at Robert properly in the slowly brightening morning. John was worried war may have changed Robert. He remembered some of the older men in the village talking about their sons coming home from the Great War and having hardness in their eyes, but Robert’s eyes were still soft brown and warm. There was still a little scar at the corner of his left eye and a little bend in his nose, both from a fight with Tony Mac who had caught them kissing behind the smoke shed.

He rubbed this thumb across the scar then let his fingertips dance across Robert’s face.

“Is everything where you left it?” Robert asked.

“As far as I can tell but I may have to make a more thorough inspection when it gets a little brighter in here.”

Robert caught his hand and kissed his fingertips. “Inspect all you like.”

In the distance John could hear the church bells heralding the winter dawn.

“I’d forgotten what church bells sound like,” Robert said, lips still against John’s fingers.

“St. John’s still needs that third bell replaced.”

Robert chuckled. It was a joke around town, St. John’s third bell that put out a dull flat note painfully out of tune with every other bell in the city. Even mixed in with the calliope of Christmas morning, its strange wavering notes could be picked out.

John was musing on church bells and the feel of Robert’s lips against his palm when a thought popped into his head. “Shit!” He quickly pushed himself up and reached for his glasses.

“What is it?”

“I told Mrs. B I’d take her to church if the weather cleared.” John hissed as his naked body collided with the air.

“I don’t suppose you could just tell her you’d rather stay in bed and have sex?”

John didn’t even answer, just started reaching for his clothes. Robert stilled his hands. “Let me.
