CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR
ANNE
Anne stood over the sink, emptying two vodka bottles. Her tongue tingled as though tempting her. She could almost taste it as it went down the drain. But she wasnât going to allow the alcohol to rule her, not when she needed to be focused.
She felt the old Anne emerging.
No more self-pity. No more falling apart when things get hard.
Her life had changed so much in the day and a half since sheâd met Jess. There was a way out, the greatest scheme of all: one sheâd toyed with countless times but never truly believed she could do.
She was wearing regular clothes; sober, it felt silly lounging around all day in her bathing suit. And anyway, it was good for people to see her out and about, as though hers and Patrickâs marriage had taken a sudden upturn. That would also mean restraining herself in other ways, hence the vodkaâs sudden introduction to the drain.
A neighbour walked by, a dog at his feet. It was a terrier, by the looks of its beard. Anne had adored animals once, when she first came to England, living in shared housing with three dogs and four cats. But sometimes when she got drunk and took pills, she wasnât in control of what she did.
Maybe in her new life she would stay sober. She could get a dog then.
Anne checked her phone as she went inside. She was waiting for Luca or Jess to ring, though Jess didnât have her number; surely sheâd get it through Luca. Or was it better if they didnât have each otherâs phone numbers?
In fact, having Lucaâs would be a mistake. She went to her phone, meaning to delete all their texts and call history, when her phone sprang to life.
It was Hairdresser.
âHello?â she said.
Lucaâs tone was vague. âAnne.â
She made herself as sweet as she could possibly be. âI love it when you say my name like that. I was starting to think youâd gone off me.â
âItâs not that,â he said.
âNo?â She made her voice breathy in the way men liked. âSo you still like me then? Luca? You still like me?â
âI didnât ring about that.â
âNo?â
âJess has asked me if youâll meet with us.â
âWith both of you?â Anne wondered how much Jess had told him. Surely not about the planned murder? Anne clenched the phone tighter, suddenly wishing she had a single shot of vodka to settle her down.
It wasnât right, them scheming behind her back.
Another woman might see the best in them. But Anneâs defences were up. She sensed something in his tone, and she thought about the conversation sheâd had with him in the car, when she said Patrick used her as a punching bag. Luca hadnât sounded convinced.
Was Jess doubting too?
âYeah, with both of us.â
Anne licked her lips. âWhy?â
âWe want to talk through a couple of things, thatâs all.â
There were limited options for what he could be talking about. They had only known each other a short while. So it was either something to do
