Not surprisingly, all investigative roads led very quickly to Antonio Barbeau and Nathan Paape. Detectives had located Barbara Olson’s purse in a storm drain only a few doors down from his house. A subsequent search of his mother’s home turned up additional stolen items from Olson, as well as bloody clothes. Not one to hold up under pressure, Paape confessed his role in the murder and immediately started shifting the blame to Barbeau. Paape acted like he didn’t want to hit her at all; he claimed that he hit her twice just to keep from being struck by Barbeau—in other words, he portrayed himself as an unwilling participant. If he thought this would have any real effect as he went through the judicial process, he was sorely mistaken.

Both Antonio Barbeau and Nathan Paape would receive life sentences, but not without the possibility of parole. Still, Barbeau won’t be eligible to even come before a parole board until he is 50. Nathan Paape, who had perhaps made the slightest of dents with the authorities, will not meet with his first parole board until he reaches his 45th birthday. In sentencing the youths, Judge Timothy Van Akkeren called the crime committed by Barbeau and Paape the “most horrific” he had seen in his 24 years on the bench.

It probably didn’t enter the minds of the killers that as they were bludgeoning Barbara Olson to death, they were destroying their own lives as well.
