Football or Soccer
Ryan Herrera loved football, even though he had grown up in a soccer-mad household. His dad had played for the Venezuelan national team, and still competed in a recreational league. His older sister played in a girlsâ league and his younger brother was the star of his Catholic school team. Even his mom had been known to kick a ball around a few times.
But Ryan was American through and through, and he loved football. When he was a little kid and his dad would kick a soccer ball to him, Ryan liked to pick it up and run away with it. When the rest of the family was gathered around the TV set, cheering for a World Cup match, Ryan would be out in the back yard with a bunch of his friends, playing touch football.
Going to an all-boys Catholic high school, he didnât have much opportunity to date girls. That didnât bother him at first; he knew girls, through his sister and her friends, and while he liked them well enough he wasnât desperate to start having sex with them. The other guys on the team used to joke and tease, and Ryan joined in, but he never quite knew what they were talking about.
His buddies tried to fix him up with girls from time to time, but he resisted. The other guys on the team started calling him Padre, as if he was in training to be a priest as well as a football player.
It wasnât until just after his eighteenth birthday that Ryan finally figured it out. A couple of the guys from the team were passing around a porn magazine, a real hard-core piece with photos of all different kinds of sex: men and women, women and women, women and animalsâeven two men going at it.
Ryanâs dick immediately pronged to attention. He wasnât a big Internet surfer and his parents had the cable box locked down so none of the kids could watch anything X-rated. Sure, heâd read the tabloid headlines about gay movie stars and musicians, but he had never considered what that really meant in physical terms. The revelation that two men could have sex together rocked his world.
Suddenly it all made senseâhis lack of attraction to girls, the funny feelings he got in the shower when other guys were naked around him. The next day he went to the public library, got on a computer, and Googled âgay Miami.â Thirty-three million hits came upâbars, clubs, hotels, websites, news and events. His dick was so hard he was afraid heâd come right there at the computer.
Saturday night he borrowed his older sisterâs car and drove to Miami Beach from his parentsâ home in the suburbs. He was extra-careful on the highway and in the parking garage; heâd have a hell of a time explaining what he was doing on the Beach if anything happened to Marisolâs car.
He walked up to Lincoln Road. It was buzzing with shoppers and diners and Ryan kept looking around him, worrying he might run into someone he knew.
