CHAPTER 15

A Picture

Greg made it to Montana by September, just in time for the birth of his daughter, Amira Eliana. Amira was born at their home, and after her birth, Greg lay in bed with Tara and the baby, and placed the multicolored tomar that Haji Ali had given him around his daughter’s neck.

But he couldn’t stay in his cozy house with his wife and new daughter forever. Jean Hoerni called, demanding to know when Greg would have a picture of the completed Korphe School to show him. He was so impatient that Greg asked what was bothering him. Hoerni admitted that his doctors had told him he had leukemia, a cancer of the blood. He might live only a few more months. “I must see that school before I die,” Hoerni said. “Promise me you’ll bring me a picture as soon as possible.”

“I promise,” Greg said.
