Brian Hamilton, the tall grey police sergeant, has finally managed to get rid of the annoying old man and the barking dog and is midway through his full English when his radio goes. Brian listens to his station commander in stony silence, chewing steadily on a piece of eggy toast.

‘You are having a laugh.’

‘What d’you mean?’

‘You are having a fucking laugh, Lee.’

‘I don’t get you, Brian, sorry.’

‘They were here.’

‘Excuse me?’

‘A middle-aged blonde woman and a bulky younger guy?’

‘Correct.’

‘They were here, in the caff. They drove off like ten minutes ago.’

‘Then it won’t take long to catch up to ’em, will it?’

‘I am halfway through my full English,’ says Brian the sergeant, with the outraged disbelief of a nun pulled out of the queue for an audience with the Pope. He receives predictably short shrift for his breakfast-based alibi, hangs up and turns to his colleague.

‘I’m afraid we’ll have to go, love.’

‘That’s alright, Dad … Sergeant. I’m finished anyway.’

‘I told you! I TOLD YOU!’ shouts Bob gleefully as Brian and his daughter leave the café, both studiously ignoring him. Leila barks deliriously. The police car pulls out into the lane like an alligator sliding into the river from a muddy bank.
