Dear Fiona,

Just a quick letter to wish you a Happy New Year! There’s so much I want to tell you, though I have a feeling you won’t understand until you’re older. I want to give you an idea of what life is like over here. One thing I learned real fast was to never let your socks get wet! They give us woven-metal inserts for trench foot, but they didn’t do the trick for this lone soldier. I’ve got a tough case of gangrene, and I’d just love a fresh pair of socks, warm from the drier. I got some in a nice care package from my mom—your Aunt Ce—last Christmas. Here’s a picture of me posing with a little box of Trix she sent. Of course, I had to share it with my buddies, since that’s just what we do.

Vietnam seemed so far away before I came, and it is way different from home. I don’t feel like I’m making this world a better place by being here. I hope, when you’re older we’ll be back at peace again, like when I was little. War is not the answer, and I want you to grow up in a better world than this.

I don’t know when I’ll get to send you another letter, so I’ll just come out and write this. I think about all of you, every day. That’s what I hold on to. It helps me wake up in the morning and face this scene. So, you see, Fiona, you’re really an important person to me, even though you don’t know me. I hope someday you’ll read my letters and know your cousin was thinking of you. Okay, enough of that. I hope you’re just having fun being a kid right now, and I hope to write again, soon.

Love,

Your Cousin Ted
