Something shrank inside Brett. “No. It"s not. Shouldn"t we get on the road

again?”

Rafferty"s brows rose. “I guess we should.” He nodded to the waitress, who was

dusting a glass-covered dish of pastries.

She brought over their check. Brett moved to pick it up, but Rafferty was

faster. “I"ll get this one. You can get the next.” He smiled faintly at Brett"s

expression. “Don"t look so worried.” He was whistling as he led the way out to the

car. “It"s going to be a warm one today.”

The air felt dry, and the cooking scents of the café mingled with the cedar and

fresh mountain air.

“You want me to take a turn behind the wheel?” Brett asked.

Rafferty shook his head. “I like to drive.” Rafferty got behind the wheel again,

and Brett went around to the passenger side.

They continued up Highway 40, through rolling green foothills of oak and

cedar. Rafferty tried the radio, but after a blast of fuzzy music, there was nothing

but static. Nothing to do but talk, and Brett wasn"t sure he had the nerve for any

more of Rafferty"s revelations.

“Light me a cigarette,” Rafferty asked after a time.

Brett complied, taking out the gold cigarette case Juliet had given him for his

last birthday. He drew out two cigarettes, stuck them into his mouth, and lit them.

He handed one to Rafferty, drew on the other himself.

“How did you get into the PI business?” he asked after an interval.

Rafferty tapped the gray tip of his cigarette into the car"s ashtray. “I guess I

was just a naturally curious fellow.”

“Do you handle a lot of murder cases?”

Rafferty smiled faintly. “Like Sam Spade? No. Not a one. Not so far. I"m in the

lost-and-found business, mostly. And mostly what people lose are other people.”

“And do you always find them?”
