Beast of Burden

“You could have at least waited for us to be in the car!” Troy’s voice bounces off of the elevator’s steel walls as he readjusts his trademark cowboy hat on his stubborn head and presses the button for the ground floor.

At his tone, I swivel my head hoping to catch his eye, but he won’t allow it. His jaw ticks, and I swear that I can hear him grinding his teeth. What the fuck is wrong with him? “What prompted your foul mood?” He’s been acting weird ever since I suggested that we bail and skip the rest of the party.

“Oh, please! You’ve got to be kidding me, Mike. I screwed up my performance because of you.” He points at me while toying with his belt with his free hand. Glaring at me, he growls, “You say things and don’t deal with the consequences.”

My cheeks are on fire, and I inhale deeply to calm myself. “Excuse me?”

“See…” His finger approaches my face accusingly. “You’re doing it again.”

“Doing what, Troy? Your performance was great. Everyone danced, cheered, and applauded. Matteo’s beyond thrilled. I bet he’s filing for divorce as we speak to marry you and benefit from your talents.” I burst out laughing, knowing that my innuendos probably aren’t welcome, but I have to try to lighten the mood.

“Ha-ha.” He takes off his hat and runs his fingers through his disheveled hair before putting it back on. “Dammit! You can’t look at me like I’m your favorite meal and the next second have this… this mask that you hide behind and tell me to fuck off like it’s totally normal,” he snarls. “My head wasn’t in the game while I was DJing, and you’re to blame, jackass.”

“Troy, you’re not making any sense.” I manage to intercept his hand that’s flying all over the place. Brushing his knuckle with my thumb, I clutch his fisted hand. “Baby, that didn’t happen. Even months ago when I probably should have cussed you out, I never did. Believe me, I’m not about to start now. I said, ‘I need to fuck you.’ You were so hyper that you misunderstood.”

“You’ve been hot and cold all night. It’s only been a few weeks, so I get that you need time before telling your friends about us. I played by your rules. Then you touch me.” He leans against the mirrored rear of the car and crosses his legs at the ankles. “Nothing obvious, of course, but you broke the rules. You’re jerking me around, and I didn’t sign up for this.”

“What do you want from me, Troy? I’m new to this.” I alternatively point to him and myself. “You’ve been attracted to guys your whole life.”

He cuts me off, his chocolate eyes daring me to react. “And girls.”

With my poker face on, I nod, flashing back to when I bumped into him while he was lip-locked with a woman. We don’t delve into specifics, and I don’t really care, to be honest. I want him.
