Chapter 13

We walk Ella down the beach. Waves tickle my bare toes, and Connor’s hand occasionally tickles my arm as we saunter side by side.

“I guess it’s sweet that she worries about you?”

I wince. “Condoms. A word I never thought I’d hear from Roberta’s mouth.” The leash gives a tug, and I jerk forward when Ella tries diving into a wave.

Connor grabs me by the hips to keep me steady. He doesn’t let go. “How much do you weigh?”

“Huh?”

“You’re really easy to pick up.”

Ella keeps walking, so we do too.

“I let you pick me up,” I mutter. “Wouldn’t have been so easy if I’d unleashed the full power of my gangly limbs.” I wave one arm and leg in the air like a coked-out marionette.

“Don’t make it a contest, man. I’ll win.”

A warm sea breeze blows a bunch of hair into my face. Taming the wayward curls is a struggle.

“When did your parents do the birds and the bees talk?” Connor asks.

I glance over at him. In the near dark of twilight, his golden tan is even more impressive. “Well, pretty early, considering I kissed a boy in sixth grade.”

“What? Really?”

When Ella again threatens to make me tumble, I give her leash a little tug until she slows to walk at my side. “Really, really. Matt… something. I can’t remember his last name. Gave him a big old smooch under the bleachers on the soccer field. It was almost summer, so I remember my palms being all sweaty. And they’d just mowed the lawn, so my first kiss smelled like grass clippings.”

“Ironic, considering your dad owns a landscaping business.”

“I indeed have a longstanding, intimate relationship with the smell of grass clippings.”

He chuckles as his hand bumps against the back of mine. “What did Matt do when you kissed him?”

I shrug. “Nothing much. Kissed back for a second. Then, we ran off to climb the jungle gym. He moved away that summer.”

“The one that got away.”

I kick at an ambitious wave. “Yeah, sure. I told my mom about it, and next thing I knew, there were all these books about sex nonchalantly scattered around our house. As if I might pick one up and start reading? The most passive aggressive birds and bees talk ever. When I didn’t take the bait, Mom and Dad sat me down and asked if I wanted to kiss girls too. I assume I made a horrified face, because they actually looked relieved, like, ‘Well, our son has a healthy libido, but at least he won’t get anyone pregnant,’ right?”

Connor laughs and puts his arm around my shoulder. “I love listening to you talk.”

“Cut it out.” I try sneaking out from under his arm, but he holds tighter. “I can’t even picture your dad giving a birds and bees talk.”

“My birds and bees talk was actually sort of late,” Connor says. “And it was because of Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

“No shit?”

Ella hops and barks back at me.

“All right, all right.” I pick up the pace. With
