âWe donât have toâ¦I mean, ifâ¦do you want to?â Nicholas stammered. âWe can.â Nicholas wanted to, but after what heâd revealed to Alex earlier in the evening, the way Alex had exited the conversation so quickly, after how heâd already run from barely a second of holding hands, Nicholas didnât want to push the issue or make Alex think he was coming onto him, unless Alex wanted him to.
âDo you, uh, want to?â Alex blinked at him.
âItâs tradition, right?â Nicholas answered. Alex lifted on his heels a little and kissed him, chaste and fast. Resting his arm on Alexâs, Nicholas held him a little closer, wanting to show him he was fine with Alex deepening the kiss if he wanted to. But Alex cut it off quickly, and Nicholas worried heâd been wrong to push this forward.
âI need another drink,â Alex said quietly, turning his back to Jade and Nicholas and walking to the snack table, glancing back shyly. Nicholas stood in stunned silence. He couldnât process what was happening. For a moment, he believed Alex hadnât kissed him out of any actual desire, but, instead, did it because of Jadeâs pressure and the mistletoe and maybe too much punch.
âTold you,â Jade said under her breath. âThat kiss was destined to happen.â
âYeah? Because look. Heâs gone. He only did it because of the mistletoe, J.â He decided what he believed was true, and Alex was only doing what was expected in the situation.
Jadeâs elbow in his ribs disrupted his thoughts, though. Alex was walking toward them, two cups in his hands, and as he got close enough, he passed one to Nicholas. âCan we talk for a second?â Alex asked, nodding to the corner of the room. Privately, apparently. Nicholas glared at Jade, then followed Alex. âSo, hereâs the thing. I sort of hate mistletoe.â
Nicholasâs heart sank. âOh. Sorry.â
âI hate it because it makes it seem like you have to kiss. Like you donât kiss because you want to,â Alex explained.
Nicholas didnât exactly love Alexâs clarification either. He should have dropped it, let them kiss and never clarified. Now heâd been flat-out rejected. He tried to hide how wounded he was, but he was damn near angry with Jade for forcing this, for making Alex think his hands were tied.
âThe thing is,â Alex said, âI actually did want to kiss you. I figured you should know, in case you thought the kiss was because of a stupid plant.â He paused and took a sip of his drink. âBut because of the mistletoe, what Iâm worried about is that you werenât interested.â
âWait, what?â Nicholas stopped in his tracks. Heâd been in his head so much he wasnât sure heâd heard Alex right.
âIâm worried you werenât interested,â Alex said. âAnyway, I should probably go, soâ¦uhâ¦â
âSo, uh, what?â Nicholas asked. He turned toward Alex fully, dipping his head to meet his eyes. This time, there was no mistletoe there as Nicholas let his hand graze Alexâs cheek. Alex tilted his head up, andâwithout Jade or anyone else egging them onâNicholas kissed him.
