When I got back to my bedroom, it was to find a crowd of girls standing outside, chatting quietly. Annabelle was there, with Lucy, and Kate from lacrosse.

Millie was with another group of girls. Like everyone else, she went silent the second I arrived.

“What’s going on?” I said, trying to avoid looking directly at Millie, as if she was Medusa and would turn me to stone.

“Miss Evans is going to be here in a second,” mumbled Annabelle. She looked shocked, and her eyes were fixed on the ground. Lucy had her arm around her.

I walked to my bedroom and they all parted, leaving a clear path to the door.

I stepped in and switched on the light.

“What the…?” The words caught in my throat.

Someone had painted MURDERER on the wall above my bed in red paint, the edges of the letters dripping down towards my covers. At least I hoped it was paint. Surely it was paint…

I took a step back, colliding into someone. Miss Evans, my house-mother, was behind me, her mouth hanging open as she took in the graffiti.

“Regia Club?” I heard someone whisper.

“Yeah,” someone else said. “They’ve signed it underneath.”

“Wow.”

“Yeah.”

“Is it true though? That she’s the one who killed him?”

I didn’t want to hear any more.

“Girls, please go to bed,” said Miss Evans.

The other girls continued to hover, as Millie folded her arms.

“I’m going to be speaking to my parents about her.” Millie nodded at me. “I don’t feel safe with her in my school – not after everything else that has happened. With…with Hugh.” Her voice cracked on the last word and she covered her face with her hands. One of her friends hugged her, but as she pulled away, she flashed an enormous smile right at me before once more pretending to sob.

My blood started to boil, because she knew something. She knew who had written on my bedroom wall – hell, she was probably more than just a member of the Regia Club. She was probably its brand-new leader.

“Please go to your room, Millie, and I’ll come and speak with you in a moment, okay?” said Miss Evans, her voice soothing.

Millie nodded, and now there were actual tears rolling down her face. Everyone looked really concerned and I didn’t understand how they couldn’t see she was faking it.

Miss Evans waited for the corridor to empty, leaving me and Annabelle behind.

“I’ll…I’ll get maintenance to paint over it and I’ll speak to Mrs Greythorne about this. Bullying is intolerable—”

But I didn’t want it going any further. I didn’t want to be blamed for any more scandals, even though none of this was my fault. Whoever had walked into my room and written this on my wall absolutely wouldn’t get caught. Even if they were, they would just hide behind the Regia Club.

They could get away with murder if they wanted to.
