As I have related, Miss Davis arrived in Hollywood at the time when the Brenda Allen investigation was nearing conclusion. She had been sent here, primarily to work with the divisional vice squad on another investigation which was in no way connected with Brenda. However, she did become a party to the Brenda Allen probe within a few days of its conclusion.

After the Brenda investigation, I remained in Hollywood for several months, working vice. In the interim, Miss Davis periodically worked with Officer Jack Ruggles and me.

During this period, Miss Davis frequently evinced a more than professional interest in Officer Ruggles, rather than an interest in Charles Stoker. This is understandable. Officer Ruggles is a young, handsome, clean cut, six-foot-four inch giant. When I first noticed her interest in Jack Ruggles and thought that it was amatory, I warned Ruggles that I had my suspicions of Miss Davis. I pointed out to him that we had originally requested the services of a far more competent policewoman and that this policewoman had been dismissed from the department at the end of her probationary period, apparently without cause. I reminded Ruggles that, when we had asked for other policewomen to come to Hollywood, their commander had refused to honor our requests. I told Ruggles that this, on the face of it, was peculiar and that it was more peculiar than ever when Miss Davis was aced into the Hollywood vice division, which was hot and steaming because of the Brenda Allen investigation.

But, in justice to Miss Davis, Ruggles and I had come to respect her ability as a policewoman. We felt that it was largely attributable to the fact that she had been raised in Hollywood, had an exceptional knowledge of bars and bartenders, and in addition was the daughter of a police officer who by fair means or foul had attained high rank in the department — as deputy chief of police.

In working with Policewoman Davis, my suspicions faded somewhat because of her excellent performance as a policewoman.

During the Brenda Allen trial, Officer Ruggles, Miss Davis, two newspaperwomen and I decided to go to Chinatown to have dinner. One of the newspaperwomen sat in the back of the car with Ruggles, while the other newspaperwoman occupied the front seat with Miss Davis and me. I was driving. The woman sitting with Ruggles began to shower him with attention, displaying considerable affection for him. This, I may say, was done in a joking, frivolous manner, perhaps superinduced by a few drinks she had previously consumed. However, I noticed that Miss Davis was obviously showing resentment. It was apparent that the newspaperwoman was trying to irritate Audre and was having fun at her expense. Finally, Miss Davis could stand it no longer.

“You must be desperate for a man!” she flared.

“You just wish you were back here — that’s your trouble,” the reporter quipped, proving that one woman can see through another at a glance, while a man can’t, even though he has an X-Ray machine trained on a gal.
