Someone is knocking on the door. Max never forgets his keys, but perhaps leaving on a flat note this morning distracted him. Maybe he can’t concentrate until we’ve cleared the air. Maybe he’ll worry that his knife will slip in surgery, or he’ll sew up the wrong tubes. Entire instruments have been left in the body after operations. Apparently, that’s really a thing, not just a plot device on medical shows.

I do a mental scan of my body as I walk down the stairs. It’s a warm afternoon and I feel weak, but not entirely poisoned—about one-third scarecrow. The garden looks very green and I have a sudden longing for the outside world, the feel of my body moving through the air, the sense that I am going somewhere, even if it’s without a purpose. Perhaps I can ask Max to put a chair out there and soak in the sun for a while, although the last time I tried that I walked back in, elated—I’m well! I just needed some fresh air!—and then crashed heavily in The Pit for several hours.

By the time I reach the front door I’m feeling giddy with the prospect of spending time with him. Thank god he’s come back. That’s the thing about Max: He’s a grown-up. He really shows up when it matters. I’m wearing one of his white work shirts with the sleeves rolled up because I’ve run out of anything clean that can reasonably be called nightwear. I undo a button, ruffle out my bed-hair, and throw open the door with only semi-ironic sickbed allure.

“Would the doctor like to see me now?”

The man in the hallway keeps a straight face.

He’s holding a very tall bunch of blue flowers, and has a newspaper tucked under one arm.

“Sorry to disappoint,” says Jesse.
