ADVICE FOR WOMEN LEADERS

JULIA WALLACE

When Kristin and I walked out of Abramson’s basement office at Harvard University, we were a little shell-shocked. Abramson was not what we had expected based on the many news reports about her rise and fall as the executive editor of the New York Times. When a student bounded in, announcing he had secured a good summer internship, Abramson jumped up and hugged him. “I’m so proud of you,” she told him.

She was funny, self-aware, and even a little bit humble. This was not the iron lady we had been prepared to meet.

We were even more surprised when almost two years after we interviewed her, just before this book was to go to print, Abramson was accused of plagiarism and sloppy journalism in her book, “Merchants of Truth” about changes and challenges in the news industry. While she had come in for plenty of criticism for her management style, she had always been respected as a journalist.

But given what we know about the newspaper business, we were not surprised by her rise and fall at the New York Times, and we believe her story holds important lessons for all women who aspire to top management jobs.
