TWENTY-FOUR
CHARLIE
Charlie groaned into her hands, and Vi put an arm around her shoulders.
Harper stood on Charlieâs other side. Elliot was spending the night with another little boy heâd made friends with in one of the art classes, giving his mom a night off. Sheâd been so excited for a girlsâ night out, and Charlie didnât want to ruin that.
âLadies, what can I getââ Wyatt stopped talking as Charlie lowered her hands. âShit.â
The long bar was L-shaped, and the three women sat at the end perpendicular to where Aiden stood with his beautiful date.
With a perfect view of them flirting.
Wyatt glanced over his shoulder at him then shook his head. âSorry, Charlie.â
âItâs fine. Why would I care if heâs here with some model-looking woman.â She tried to shrug it off like it was nothing, but she knew her friends saw right through it. Especially Wyatt, who sheâd shared more with in the last week than anyone. He knew everything that was going on between her and Aiden.
âSheâs not that pretty,â Vi said.
âRight. And Iâm the Queen of England,â Charlie deadpanned. The woman was gorgeous.
Wyatt handed his sister a drink without her having to ask. âIf it makes a difference, they didnât come here together.â
âSee,â Harper said, âshe just approached him. Nothing to worry about.â
But Wyattâs wince told her otherwise.
âHe approached her, didnât he?â Charlie crossed her arms as he nodded. She knew tonight was important for Harper, but she honestly just wanted to leave.
As if reading her mind, Harper said, âWe can go if you want.â
Charlie hesitated but then sighed. âNo. Itâs fine. This is your one night to come out. I⦠Iâll just ignore him.â
Except, Aiden wouldnât stop glancing her way. Her throat tightened, clogging with emotions. Vi asked for a beer, and Wyatt grabbed one for her. He asked what Charlie wanted, and she ordered shots for all three of them.
The crowd slowly grew as time passed. When she finally couldnât take it anymore, she took a second shot and stood from her stool.
âWhat are you doing?â Vi asked.
âYou were right. Congratulations. I let it happen again.â
Her cousin didnât look triumphant though, instead frowning.
Before she could speak, Charlie shook her head. She pointed across the bar to a few men who looked about their age. âWhich is why Iâm going to go pick one of them up.â
âCharlieââ Harper started, but Charlie held up a hand.
âI need to forget about these stupid Barnes brothers for a night and just have fun.â
She turned on her heel and stalked away. With her chin held high, she walked right past Aiden and his handsy date. He tried to get her attention, but she ignored him and headed straight for the group of men. The four of them stopped talking as she approached. A few watched her with curiosity, but the one sheâd locked eyes on grinned.
He knew what she wanted.
âDance with me?â she asked without preamble.
The man looked her up and down, taking in the tight red dress Vi had coerced her into wearing.
