A stack of congenital heart disease and defect instructional pamphlets sat on the night stand of the hospital room. Whitleigh folded the last brochure and passed it on to Collier.
âYou know, most parents donât get an instruction manual for their new baby.â She pushed back her hair. âI guess thatâs a plus.â
âTrue.â Collier chuckled and leaned back on the pillow next to her. âIâm pretty sure I could write a decent research paper after reading all of this.â
âYou and me both.â She eyed the mound of papers and packets. âThis is so overwhelming.â
âIt is a lot of information, but ââ
Whitleigh jostled her hair with her hands. âNo, I mean yes it is, but thatâs not what I meant.â
âI know what you meant.â Collier kissed her cheek and wrapped an arm around her shoulder. The hospital bed, though small, allowed just enough room to cuddle. âAll new parents have to feel bombarded, terrified even.â
Was that true? Whitleigh sighed. âItâs scary enough bringing home a newborn, but I donât know how to take care of Linc.â
âWeâre looking at a million and two brochures that can clue us in, and the doctors here have already said we can call them anytime.â
âWhat if I hurt him on accident? How do I take care of a baby with a serious heart condition?â
âYou love him, Whit, thatâs how. Youâre already a pro at that.â
âHow in the world will I ever be able to discipline this child?â She slapped a palm to her forehead. âHeâs gonna be a little stinker.â
âOur little stinker. Nothing wrong with that.â
âAnd what about babysitters? Who can watch him if we want to go on a date?â
Collier shrugged. âNothing wrong with dinner and a movie on our couch.â He winked. That deserved a playful elbow to his side.
âIâm being serious.â Whitleigh held her head in her palm. âWhat if I donât schedule his next surgery in time? What if I donât notice the signs that somethingâs gone wrong?â
âYouâre forgetting that Iâm here too.â
âYou wonât always be.â She pulled his arm around her neck. He tried to yank it away. âIâm not being mean, Collier. I need to know I can do all of this on my own too.â
He sat up.
âIâm really not trying to hurt you, baby, but if youâre wanting to stay in the military longer, then I canât be dependent on you all of the time.â
He had to know that. No military wife can be totally dependent on her husband. Common knowledge.
âI donât know if I can stay in the Army anymore, Whit.â
What?
Whitleigh let go of his arm. He hadnât mentioned this before. Her bottom lip tightened. All of these months preparing herself to embrace military life, working to deal with it gracefully, for what? She swallowed and sorted through her thoughts. No need for an unnecessary argument.
âI know youâve been through a lot, but is this what you want? Iâve stood beside you and will continue to do so.â The sheer prospect of a normal civilian life compared to a
