A stack of congenital heart disease and defect instructional pamphlets sat on the night stand of the hospital room. Whitleigh folded the last brochure and passed it on to Collier.

“You know, most parents don’t get an instruction manual for their new baby.” She pushed back her hair. “I guess that’s a plus.”

“True.” Collier chuckled and leaned back on the pillow next to her. “I’m pretty sure I could write a decent research paper after reading all of this.”

“You and me both.” She eyed the mound of papers and packets. “This is so overwhelming.”

“It is a lot of information, but —”

Whitleigh jostled her hair with her hands. “No, I mean yes it is, but that’s not what I meant.”

“I know what you meant.” Collier kissed her cheek and wrapped an arm around her shoulder. The hospital bed, though small, allowed just enough room to cuddle. “All new parents have to feel bombarded, terrified even.”

Was that true? Whitleigh sighed. “It’s scary enough bringing home a newborn, but I don’t know how to take care of Linc.”

“We’re looking at a million and two brochures that can clue us in, and the doctors here have already said we can call them anytime.”

“What if I hurt him on accident? How do I take care of a baby with a serious heart condition?”

“You love him, Whit, that’s how. You’re already a pro at that.”

“How in the world will I ever be able to discipline this child?” She slapped a palm to her forehead. “He’s gonna be a little stinker.”

“Our little stinker. Nothing wrong with that.”

“And what about babysitters? Who can watch him if we want to go on a date?”

Collier shrugged. “Nothing wrong with dinner and a movie on our couch.” He winked. That deserved a playful elbow to his side.

“I’m being serious.” Whitleigh held her head in her palm. “What if I don’t schedule his next surgery in time? What if I don’t notice the signs that something’s gone wrong?”

“You’re forgetting that I’m here too.”

“You won’t always be.” She pulled his arm around her neck. He tried to yank it away. “I’m not being mean, Collier. I need to know I can do all of this on my own too.”

He sat up.

“I’m really not trying to hurt you, baby, but if you’re wanting to stay in the military longer, then I can’t be dependent on you all of the time.”

He had to know that. No military wife can be totally dependent on her husband. Common knowledge.

“I don’t know if I can stay in the Army anymore, Whit.”

What?

Whitleigh let go of his arm. He hadn’t mentioned this before. Her bottom lip tightened. All of these months preparing herself to embrace military life, working to deal with it gracefully, for what? She swallowed and sorted through her thoughts. No need for an unnecessary argument.

“I know you’ve been through a lot, but is this what you want? I’ve stood beside you and will continue to do so.” The sheer prospect of a normal civilian life compared to a
