CHAPTER 19

Thanks, Malik

“I’m so sorry to bother you.” I said as he opened the door.

I was at the door of Malik’s house, the guy I met earlier that night at the Hide-A-Way. He gave me his number before I left from giving Demari his services. I couldn’t make it home that night, and I needed someone to talk to and help me get my mind right. The pain and regret that I felt from my forbidden deal was getting the best of me, and the anger I held within was indescribable. I didn’t know where else to turn so I ended up on the porch of Malik’s house.

“It’s no problem, man. Come on in.” Malik accepted me with a warm welcome into his home.

“This is a nice place you got here.” I tried to take my mind off of what was really troubling me.

Malik’s house was enormous and had a country-ranch style setting. The inside had walls that looked like they belonged in a log cabin, and the floors were made of beautiful, shiny buffed wood. The fireplace was lit and burned low. It was easy to pick up a romantic sense once you entered into the cozy home.

“Thanks man, but it’s really my wife’s touch. I don’t know anything about decorating. And do you see those expensive artworks that are all over the walls?”

I nodded my head.

“My wife got those too. They cost me a fortune, but she was deter mined to have them. I don’t know anything about art, but she told me that they were originals. It’s funny though because when friends come over and ask about them, I’m totally in the dark.”

I laughed as Malik tried to uplift my spirit with the art conversation. He was a really good host, but my mind just kept reminding me of the sins I committed earlier. Malik was really cool. He never once asked me to talk about what happened at the Hide-A-Way, and he didn’t even mention the fact of how bad I sounded on the phone when I called him. He just treated me as a friend and didn’t force me to say anything about what I was going through. I guess he knew I needed to get my mind off of the guilt, and he was certainly making that easy.

“So where is your wife?” I tried making small talk so he wouldn’t be the only one talking.

“She and my son went to her mother’s place for the week. Her mom was feeling sick all week and she wanted to be there with her.”

“Wow. You seem so happy with your life.” I sat down on the genuine leather sofa in his den.

“Yeah, I’m pretty happy. I mean we all have our ups and downs.” Malik walked over to the television set and picked up the remote control that was on top of it.

“So what does your wife do, if you don’t mind my asking?”

“She’s a lawyer. Actually she’s the only black female attorney at her firm.” Malik turned on the television.
