Panic was coursing through me. I leaned against the pavilion door, before pulling out the card she’d given me. Amy Barron, personal stylist. What if Cath found out I’d spoken to her and said nothing? Was I really going to have my life derailed by a woman who organised clothes by colour in people’s wardrobes?

I glanced at my watch. After worrying about how I was going to fill my day, if I didn’t leave right now, I was going to be late fetching Megan and Eddie from Graham. My mobile rang, making me jump. For one minute, I thought it was Cath with a secret camera trained on me, asking me what I was playing at. But it was Graham.

‘You haven’t left yet, have you?’

‘No, I’m just about to. Is there a problem?’

‘Megan doesn’t want to come back to yours. She’s begging to stay here.’

I wasn’t having that nonsense. ‘Don’t be silly. They’ve got school in the morning. In case you’ve forgotten, they don’t break up for the summer holidays for another two weeks.’

‘I don’t mind getting up early and driving them. It’s only forty-five minutes. I washed their uniforms when I picked them up on Friday.’

‘No, you’re not starting that. They come to you one weekend in two and during the week in term-time they’re with me. We can look at it again in the holidays.’

‘Rebecca, listen to me. They’re having such a nice time at the beach. The weather is supposed to be boiling at least for the rest of this week. It’s so good for Eddie to run around after he’s been cooped up in lessons all day. It does help him concentrate better. And his swimming is coming on really well.’

‘No, Graham, you listen to me. You’re the one that made us lose our home. You’re not making me lose my kids as well. They need me.’

‘Rebecca, this isn’t about that. It’s what’s best for the children. Megan was up all night crying her eyes out about how she hates the place you’re living because of the insects.’

‘So you get to keep the kids because you’ve been lucky enough to be able to move in with your mum? Nice try, mate. No, they come back here.’ I hoped I sounded tougher than I felt. The thought that Meg was sobbing into her pillow during the night and I wasn’t there to comfort her ripped at my heart. Every little bit of me ached to give her a hug, to tell her everything would be okay.

Graham and I delivered punches to and fro, my fury growing by the second that he was able to continue playing happy families and go to the beach while every day brought me a new problem to solve. Then Megan came on the line, sobbing. ‘Mum, don’t make me come back. Please. I can’t sleep there. I want to stay at Grandma’s.’

I felt the fight in me collapse like an underdone Yorkshire pudding. Megan handed the phone to Graham. ‘I’d better not find out that you encouraged her.
