Chapter Five

Connor

Ava’s tiny snores rumbled against my neck. My girl had had a full day.

We hadn’t figured out anything about the hotel room, and it hadn’t gotten any bigger when we’d gone to dinner.

I laid my daughter on the big bed and pulled the blanket over her. “She needs her pjs and a bath, but I’m gonna let her sleep.”

“Good idea.” Noelle stifled a yawn of her own. “She’s had a big day.”

“So have you.” I’d only turned on the light near the door, so the lights from outside were solely responsible for the glow that shrouded Noelle. She looked fucking gorgeous. Peaceful. I was used to surrounding myself with football players fueled on ambition who ate indecision for breakfast. The change of pace is kinda nice. “Wanna watch a movie?”

“Sure.” She headed over to the tiny living room area hanging onto the dividing curtain.

My wolf rumbled in approval.

“So we should probably talk about sleeping arrangements now, since there are two beds and three of us, and the queen is already in the big bed,” she said.

“You can sleep in there with her. She might only kick you once or twice.” I grinned. If Ava wasn’t here, I’d be tempted to invite Noelle to my bed…

“Are you sure? I was planning on taking the sofa bed.” She raked her gaze over me. “Will you fit?”

“Might not be the most comfortable night, but I’ll get through it.” I picked up the remote and took a seat on the couch. “What are you in the mood for?”

“A holiday movie, of course, so we can see how inaccurate and idealized it is and pretend for a minute that our lives are like that.” She took a seat beside me. This couch wasn’t that big at all. “I talk a big game for someone who binges these movies.”

I handed her the remote. “Then I defer to the expert.”

“Oh, the pressure.” She laughed. “I’m going to pick the sappiest one. There will probably be a dog involved, a farmer, and an overworked lady from the city who realizes simple small town life is where it’s at.”

“Think there’s any of those movies about people like us?”

She quirked a brow. “Shifters? Plenty of them.”

“I mean more specifically.” I swallowed hard. Heat was rising in my body. I’d been so close to her all day, inhaling her scent, trying to keep everything professional. One wrong move would implode my life, so I had to be careful. “A single dad football player, a nanny who adores his kid, snowed in on Christmas?”

“Don’t think so, but we’re great candidates for one of them, with our tragic backstories.” She clapped her hand over her mouth. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to be flip about it.”

“Don’t be sorry. I’m glad you made me talk about Jen tonight. You were right, she deserves better than to have me keep her stories a secret. And it was good practice because there’s no way I can’t talk about her in Sawtooth.”

“It’s gonna be good. I have a feeling.
