Chapter Six
Eric left his mother feeling conflicted. The story she had told certainly made him understand her paranoia better, but he resented that she had not trusted him with the truth earlier. No doubt she would say that she was doing it for his own protection, but that excuse was beginning to wear thin. He wasnât going to be the same with his own child. At least she was willing to listen to reason when it came to his future though. Having a fake marriage with Triss certainly wasnât his ideal way of solving things as it felt like a great disservice to his actual relationship with Shane, but if Shane was okay with it and it meant that the two of them could be together, then it might be worth a try. The only thing was to trust in Triss.
She had guessed his sexual orientation at the party when dozens of brides had been presented to him, but he was certain she would never guess he was a wolf. He found her in town, at the bar as usual, socializing with sailors and merchants and all the disreputable people of the city. She wasnât anyoneâs idea of a princess, and yet she stood out among them all as a trusted friend. In another world, one where he preferred the company of women to men, he might well have shown a genuine interest in making her his bride. She was more entertaining and livelier than the prim and proper subdued girls who were so concerned with being what they thought he wanted them to be they ended up showing no personality of their own, and only served to bore him. Of course, even marriage wouldnât tame Trissâ wild spirit and he would be left heartbroken as she put a life of adventure above a life of love.
But, thankfully, he didnât have to worry about that. She smiled as she saw him, and left her group to saunter over, swaying her hips. Eric smiled as he noticed the row of heads that turned her way as she walked, as though she was the moon pulling the tides along with her.
âWe meet again,â Triss said.
âLetâs go for a walk. I have to talk with you about something,â he said.

They ended up outside, the fresh air whirling about their heads. The day was still young so there was a vigor and energy to the air that made everyone around him skip and bound about. Children scampered along, playing their make-believe games as they rushed home from school, and lovers strolled by, lost in the stars in their eyes.
Eric let Triss talk until they reached a private spot. He turned abruptly and interrupted her.
âTriss, I need to request a favor of you, but first Iâ¦I must ask you what may seem like a strange question.â
Triss rested one hand on her hip and tilted her head to the side. A lock of red hair fell down, which she blew away from the side of her mouth.
