At 4.20 am that same morning Korvettenkapitan Gerhard Lamprecht was driving south towards Berlin in his Mercedes. After he had attended to the evacuation and dispersal of all personnel to Berlin and Plon, he had left the Mecklenburg Compound late the previous evening and was in good spirits, eager to see his wife and to report his presence in Berlin to Bormann at the Reichskanzlei later in the morning. And with good fortune on his side, he decided there was every likelihood that he and his wife would be on their way to Konstanz before the day was out.

Then where the highway entered a dense stretch of evergreen forest south of Neubrandenburg, the same forest in which Wohldorf had concealed his convoy on the journey north to the Mecklenburg Compound some days earlier, he suddenly and unaccountably found himself flagged down by two men armed with flashlights. Sweeping the Mercedes to a crisp halt on the wayside carpet of pine needles, he wound down the window and peered out at the two men whom he saw were muffed in dark overcoats and hats. ‘Yes?’ he curtly demanded. ‘What’s going on here?’

The two men stepped close to the car and looked in at him uncertainly.

Lamprecht’s temper suddenly erupted. ‘Verdammter Scheisz! What in hell do you want?’

‘Please,’ the man said with stolid patience. ‘We were instructed to intercept you on the way south. I assure you it’s important, vital. Now if you would be so kind.’

Seething inwardly, Lamprecht thrust the door open and stepped out into the chill early morning air. ‘Where are we going?’

‘Please. This way. Follow me.’ The taller man started across the highway in the manner of a man confident of the direction in which his objective lay, stopped when he reached the opposite verge, and stepped adroitly to the side.

Held in the dim glow of the flashlight following him, Lamprecht hesitated in consternation, started to turn around, and was immediately dealt two blows of such stunning force in the back that he was clubbed to his knees.

Standing behind his victim, SS-Obersturmführer Arendt of the Geheime Staatspolizei Berlin Office, watched Lamprecht struggle to regain his feet, took deliberate aim with the Walther P38, fired a third time, and saw Lamprecht lurch forward on to his face. Then pocketing the Walther, he grabbed Lamprecht’s feet and glanced up at his hesitating companion. ‘Come on!’ he snapped. ‘What are you waiting for? Into the woods with him, hurry!’

The two men between them carried the body a short distance through the pines to the prearranged spot, laid it out in the undergrowth, and with
