Chapter 20. The Bolthole.

The bolthole was an abandoned fishmongering hub from the early days when Marsburg’s immediate riverside carried enormous bounties. As with the forestland which had long since been chopped down, the waters now lay empty, serving mostly to send goods south or to bring goods in from Sommerwein. The place still smelled of fish, and of burnt human flesh. Around the sides of the dark room were buckets filled with discolored, faintly yellow blood. More buckets carried putrid water. A table along a wall had been covered in utensils, ranging from the medical to the outright diabolical. It seemed that the place had, over time, sank into a state of madness.

Yuchi, Arvid, and Thomas stood near the door they’d just came through.

The Free Company’s Otto and Klaus stared at the three from the opposite wall, their arms crossed and each with a foot jacked against the wall. A door stood between them where the enormous sellsword Hans had just disappeared to speak with Adelbrecht.

“A fucking spy,” Otto said, shaking his head. “I suppose that makes us rubes.”

Thomas laughed. “Hey, there’s no cause to take offense. I’m sure your outfit has seen the passing of many spies, you just never knew it.”

Otto ran his fingers over the hilt of his sword. “Ain’t fishin’ for jokes.”

“Hey yeah, if you were fishing for jokes though this would be just the place to do it, cause,” Thomas paused, motioning his arm around the fishery and old fishmongering. “You know.”

“Ain’t fishin’ for a history lesson neither, shithead.”

The door between them opened up. Hans ducked a bit to get underneath its hang and he stared out like a bear from hibernation.

“Alright,” he said. “The captain will speak with you. Do anything foul, and I’ll rip your eyes and tongues out myself.”

Yuchi nodded, his snake-scale ear winking in the dim firelight. “Understood.”

“Alright then. Come on.”

Hans disappeared back from whence he came and the three men went in after him. Klaus and Otto lowered their arms as the strangers passed by.

“You looking foul already, lil’ servant,” Otto said. “Maybe I just slit ya right here ‘n’ now and save us some trouble.”

Thomas smiled sheepishly. “Hey man, maybe we’ll work together in a second here and then, uh, then you’ll need me. Ever thought about that?”

“I’ll tie your cock into a sheep-shank knot, you fuck,” Otto said and spat. “’Need me’, the fuckin’ tongue on this shitter.”

Klaus simply stared at Yuchi. The sellsword looked him up and down and said, “You’re an interesting fella.”

Yuchi said, “I’ve seen your face many a time.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

The traveler bowed. “Only that I respect the danger of your presence.”

The sellsword smirked. “Ah yeah, damn right you do.”

Hans came back out the door. “Quit stalling and follow me.”

Yuchi, Arvid, and Thomas were led down a brief hallway, a chute where fish guts used to fall before either traversing back into the riverside or into the sewers. First it was the former, and when that stuffed up it went to the latter.
