Chapter Six

Joe couldn’t believe it. The honeymoon was over! Margaret had left him standing there, holding his gun. Just what the hell was she so pissed off about, anyway? She had said she was fine. In fact, just the night before, she had told him what a good idea this was while snuggled in front of that crackling fire. Margaret was the most sensual, responsive woman he could ever have dreamed of having. She filled something in him that he realized he had never had. Oh, he still loved Evie, but they had been so young when they got together, and there had never been the smoking hot attraction he felt with Margaret, which went way past anything physical. This woman stirred his interest, his mind, his soul, so much so that he wanted to be a better man. She made him see deeper meaning in everything and made him realize that sometimes, things weren’t black and white.

But this…he was at a loss to figure out what the hell had just happened. She sure hadn’t said one word to him or given him any hint she wasn’t having fun. Granted, he had gotten that she didn’t like the chill of the lake, and when she had screeched that something touched her—likely a salamander or small fish—she bolted from the lake, splashing and carrying on. Then she had stood there, dripping, naked, and shivering as she grabbed a towel and tossed him one of those withering looks that could kill.

Joe didn’t bother to pack up anything, but he did bank the fire, making sure to securely tie what little dry goods he had left in the tree. For over three hours, he wandered the area where the horses had bolted, calling Mercedes and Star over and over, but neither answered and neither came. This was just one more thing Margaret was better at than he was. He’d seen her with Angel, the way she could shout out the horse’s name or whistle, and Angel would come. She would hold out her hand and walk with the horse without a lead as it joined right up with her, walking side by side as if the two were connected by an invisible rope.

“Where the hell are you two?” Joe shouted, glancing around the dimming forest. It was getting late, and he didn’t have a flashlight because he had expected to just come and get them. Good grief, how far could they have gone?

Joe started back to camp and was just stepping over the rise in the trail when he heard the distant sound of a horse picking its way through the brush. He called out “Mercedes!” but paused when he spotted Margaret’s dark horse, Angel. For a second, he was crushed by a wave of
