Chapter Nineteen

Scott was meeting with executives from various pharmaceutical companies, who were intent on expressing their concerns about a proposed bill reducing the price of certain medications, when the door to his office flew open and the White House press secretary rushed in.

“What’s going on?” Scott asked sternly, secretly happy to turn his attention away from the whining pharm leeches. These guys were billionaires—and the cheapest, most insecure assholes he’d ever met.

“I tried to stop her,” said Margaret, Scott’s secretary. She was frowning at Heather Fielding as though contemplating bending her over a matronly knee.

“It’s okay, Margaret.” He turned back to the executives and excused himself before following Heather and Margaret from the office. He made sure the door was firmly closed behind himself before saying, “What the hell is this about?”“Randall, I just got word that the New York Times is about to release a tell-all article concerning the White House Investigations Unit,” Heather said as she paced across the reception area.

“When? What does it say?” Scott asked, his mind racing.

“Within the hour, and it mentions your investigations teams.” Heather looked nervous mentioning Scott’s teams, as though afraid Scott would sic one on her personally.

Scott cursed and scrubbed a hand over his face. Heather was right to be nervous. Called “crews” by Scott and Blunt, the teams were responsible for making sure that no scandal ever touched the president, that any evidence of the president’s involvement in anything that would shame, embarrass, or even remotely inconvenience said president went away. Each and every president had a variety of crews in operation, some allowing their investigative teams more leeway than others. Scott’s crews had carte blanche; they could do whatever they deemed necessary to find and neutralize threats to his presidency.

“What about my teams?” Scott said slowly, scrutinizing Heather. How much did the woman know?

“The article mentions unlawful tracking devices, stolen and missing documents, illegal taps on laptop and cellular microphone systems …” Heather trailed off, her wide eyes staring at Scott.

Trying to regain control of his expression, Scott shook his head. “Unbelievable. I hate election time. Everyone does everything they can to get their own five minutes of fame. I expected as much from a rag like the New York Times though.” He paused. “Do you think people will take it seriously?”

She sighed. “I don’t know. What should we do?”

“Go and get Steve Blunt and tell him to find me. We have some cleaning house to do.”

“Will do, Mr. President,” Heather said before striding off on her ridiculous high heels. Gone was the friendly “Randall.” Well, it didn’t serve to have underlings too comfortable.

Scott had just turned back to his office and was straightening his suit jacket when he heard Blunt’s voice. “That was quick,” he muttered. If he knew Blunt, Steve had probably gotten wind of the article and had already been on his way to Scott’s office.

After making his excuses to the pharm guys, who strode from the room as though they had something important to do
