Chapter 6

Cilla stared at the schoolgirl in front of her and pushed her hands into her pockets. She could cheerfully throttle the irritating girl standing in front of her. It was Friday, she wanted to leave for the farm, and this little miss wanted to argue about the damn menu for the prom.

On any other day she would be ashamed of her catty thoughts, but the rest of the committee was as exasperated as she was. Cilla got up.

“Okay, we’re not going to agree on anything this afternoon. Cindy, why don’t you devise a menu as you would want it, email it to the rest of the committee, everyone let me know what you think and when we meet next week, we can put it to a vote. We have so many other things to organize, we can’t talk forever about the menu. It’s a prom, not a regal wedding. Agreed?”

Cindy opened her mouth, clearly not nearly finished with her ideas, but the rest of the group was already leaving the room. She pressed her lips together and clearly still miffed, also left.

Cilla sighed, feeling terrible. She’d been bitchy when she should have been supportive. She rubbed her temple. The beginnings of a headache were again letting her know about it. The kid was such an irritation.

It was bloody ridiculous. They were grown ups. Surely they should be able to find a few minutes to meet somewhere?

She left the classroom in a hurry and stormed around the corner, intent to get to her car as quickly as possible. As she rounded the corner, she bumped into the vice principal. His hands shot out and he grabbed her shoulders in an effort to stop her.

She laughed. “Sorry, I’m in such a hurry.”

He returned her smile. “It’s fine. It’s not every day a beautiful woman crashes into me.”

Cilla laughed and waved over her shoulder as she hastened forward. There were so many things she had to do this afternoon and she wanted to phone Cameron to see if they couldn’t try again to find some time over the weekend to be together.

Scratching in her bag for her car keys, she heard a car starting up close by. She looked up, into Cameron’s grim face. He gave her a humourless salute before he drove away.

Dumbfounded Cilla stared after him. What the hell …?

“You okay?” the vice principal asked behind her.

“Yeah, I’m … fine, thanks,” she murmured and got into her car. It slowly dawned on her what had happened just now – Cameron had to have
