`Beth, what a pleasant surprise!` exclaimed Marius, jumping to his feet.

`We were enjoying a brief outing, and being close to Mount Sion, it came to us that we should call upon you,` declared Beth, as though she had prepared what she might say, and was rushing, breathlessly, through the words.

`We wanted to be sure you were improving after your ordeal, didn`t we, Rowena?`

`I`m extremely well, having rested much of the day,` said Marius, engaging her glance, unable to look away. In that moment, he forgot those around him.

`Forgive my friend. I do believe the little incident at Rusthall has waterlogged his brain,` Roger said. `He has forgotten every courtesy. Won`t you be seated. Would you care for some tea?`

`Sorry, Beth, what am I thinking of?` stuttered Marius.

`Pay no regard to Roger, Marius. I do believe it`s his little joke,` responded Beth, sitting on the sofa. He quickly sat by her side.

`Are you being truthful? Are you really much improved?`

`Truly, Beth, I am completely recovered.`

Marius looked into her eyes, taken aback to find compassion, concern, and something else in the manner she returned his gaze.

`Miss Conyers, it is quite pleasant now in the garden. Would you care to join me for a stroll around the herbaceous borders?`

Roger was directing his attention to Beth`s cousin.

`A splendid idea, Mr Dashwood.`

With no further word, he opened the double doors, and descending the steps they began a gentle stroll among the flower beds.

`Marius, we cannot stay long. But, I was anxious to see you.` She blushed. `I mean, to ask after your health.`

`Beth, I have been thinking about you every minute since you came into my room yesterday.`

Two pink spots blossomed on her cheeks. `Marius, I hope I did not appear too brazen. Coming unannounced into the bedroom, and blatantly making an assignation for today.` Her face a little downcast at the thought of what she had done.

`My dearest Beth,` said Marius, taking one of her hands, cool and delicate in his grasp. `How could you suppose, for one moment, that your comments might be deemed bold. I delight in the fact you can say to me exactly what you think. I would never believe you less than perfect.`

`Now you are mocking me,` said Beth, a little uncertainly.
