Chapter Thirty-One
February 2007
A persistent tapping roused Anna from a deep sleep; she groaned and rolled out of bed. Her body lagged with tiredness as she stepped over the luggage strewn across the bedroom floor and through to the hallway. She yawned and squinted against the daylight as she opened the front door. A gust of cold, damp air hit her, and she regretted not grabbing a cardigan.
âGrace! What are you doing here? I thought we werenât catching up until tomorrow.â Anna folded her goose-bumped arms over her chest, acutely aware that her T-shirt offered little modesty.
âSurprise!â Grace said with an uncertain smile. Rain dripped off the hood of her yellow raincoat and trickled down her nose and chin. Tendrils of wet hair stuck to her face like tentacles.
Anna stared at her through wide eyes.
Grace frowned. âCan I come in or are you gonna leave me out here to drown?â
âYeah, sorry. Iâm not really awake yet.â Arms still folded tightly across her chest, Anna stood aside.
Grace stepped over the threshold and held out a sopping-wet bouquet of red roses. âI got you these. I saw them on my way here, and I thought theyâd be nice⦠to welcome you home.â
Anna focused on the flowers as they dripped all over the floor. Grace removed her wet coat and hung it on the hook by the door.
âThere, thatâs grand.â She rubbed her hands together. âI bet youâve not seen rain like this for a while?â
Anna shook her head, her eyes still trained on the bouquet.
âIâm sorry for just showing up, unannounced like. I didnât think youâd mind. I was on my way to work but I had to see you. I couldnât go the whole day knowing you were back here, and I hadnât seen you yet.â
âGrace, Iâ¦â Anna strained for words, gave up and sighed. âSorry, Iâm still half asleep. Can I make you a drink?â Not waiting for an answer, she walked through to the kitchen, placed the flowers in the sink and flicked the kettle on. When she turned around Grace embraced her.
Annaâs heart raced at the perfect fit of Graceâs body pressed into her own. Graceâs hands on her back, pulling her close. She breathed in the sweet, musky scent of her and for a moment nothing had changed. But noâ
Anna opened her eyes and stepped back. Grace reached out and touched her cheek.
âItâs so good to see your face. Youâre so tanned, look at you⦠and youâve cut your hair. It suits you. God, Iâve missed you so much.â
Anna swallowed, her mouth suddenly dry. She tucked some loose strands of hair behind her ear. âIâve missed you too, Grace, but thereâsââ
âBefore you say anything, I have to say a few things. You know how you said we needed space and time to figure things out?â
Anna looked at her and nodded.
âWell, you were right. My mind is clearer than ever. All of this time youâve been away, youâre all Iâve thought about. Iâm leaving Rupert. I want us to be together.
