Chapter Twenty One

Emily carefully turned the door handle, hand on the door keeping it steady and silent as she opened it.

“Where are we going?” Harry hissed.

“Here,” said Emily, finally opening the door fully.

Inside, the altar was already dressed, a white screen behind a dais, columns for flowerpots, the tiny chapel looked like it belonged in a fairy tale. Emily heard Harry’s breath catch in her throat.

“And what exactly are we supposed to be doing?” asked Harry.

“Looking for clues,” Emily said primly. “And… and anything else suspicious.”

Harry stood at the head of the aisle looking at Emily with one raised eyebrow. Her hair was still damp from the shower and there were tiny gray smudges under her eyes from being up too late. Up too late comforting Emily.

“Clues.”

“Or anything else suspicious,” Emily nodded. “Go on then, you take that side, I’ll take this one.”

With one last despairing look, Harry shook her head and began strolling slowly down one side of the wooden pews.

“Imagine getting married in here,” she said. “It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”

“Hush,” Emily said. “We’re not supposed to be in here.”

But it was beautiful. Heart-breakingly beautiful, even in the cold bright light of morning. Sabrina would look so wonderful walking down this aisle, and Emily could already see Gabe waiting for her at the end. It was going to be the perfect wedding.

She could almost cry, except she was all cried out.

She was, she had to admit, slightly better this morning. It had been a shock, Sav announcing things like that. But then, that was Sav, wasn’t it? Selfish, unconcerned with what others thought of her.

For so long she’d been a part of Emily’s life, a part of the way she saw herself, that it was difficult to move on, difficult to say that this one-sided dream had come to an end. But it had to. Emily had known that for far longer than she cared to admit.

Maybe Sav would be happy with her bartender. Maybe the affair wouldn’t last until the end of the week. But whatever happened, Emily was certain that she needed to get on with life, that she needed to let go of the idea of Sav.

“Wow,” Harry said in the echoing emptiness of the chapel.

“What?” asked Emily, thinking she’d found something.

“Oh, sorry, nothing, just, well, just that the wedding programs are over here and they’re really sweet, that’s all.”

“Oh,” Emily said, continuing on with her own inspection.

But maybe everything wasn’t lost. She had Harry, after all. Harry who had watched her cry, comforted her, been there. Harry who was fun and sweet and pretty and everything else. Harry who could be the help she needed to get over Sav.

Would that be such a bad thing? After all, Harry herself needed experience too. Perhaps they could both learn a thing or two from this. It wasn’t like she’d be taking advantage. And there was plenty of chemistry there, she wouldn’t deny that.

Alright, it wasn’t fireworks and clashing cymbals kind of chemistry. But kissing Harry had been… tingly.
