Chapter Five
JoJo
âAnd there he was, kissing me.â She jerked a gown over a white, headless mannequin.
âEasy, the dress didnât do anything to you.â Haley reached to steady the fake bride. âYou know he was here last night talking to Cole about you.â
âReally? What did he say?â
Haley recounted Coleâs version of Buckâs story. And it sounded like the one Jo knew. The one about the kiss and the thinks.
âI canât believe he talked to Cole about me.â
âWhy not? Youâre talking to me about him. Jo, itâs Buck Mathews. Your Buck. The one youâve loved since ninth grade.â
âHeâs not my Buck. And I didnât love him. Just liked him a lot. Besides, he was different then.â
âYou mean not a superstar.â When the bells on the door clattered, Haley walked over to the mezzanine railing. âAfternoon, Mr. Drew. Just leave the mail on the counter.â
âHow can his fame and fortune not change him? Change his perspective?â JoJo hoisted the fiberglass form and started down to the grand salon. The new gown from Bray-Lindsay was another upgrade for the shop, a bit more on the ritzy side.
JoJo had suggested displaying the gown under the beautiful Christmas lights instead of waiting for spring.
âSome girl will get engaged this season and want to go shopping right away.â
âYouâre getting good at this bridal shop business.â
All part of the plan.
âSo you didnât like the kiss but you liked the song?â Haley followed Jo with a pair of white gloves.
âWho said I didnât like the kiss?â Jo set the mannequin between the window and the tree. âI loved the song. Itâs beautiful. I gave them one line, and they gave me a third of the credit. âA third for a word,â Buck said.â
âOne word, one kiss, and youâre joining the family business.â Haley slipped the first glove on one of the posed hands. âWhat do you think? Too much? But the sleeves are short, so I think it works.â
âTry the fingerless lace instead. More elegant. And Iâm not joining the family business.â
âIf you ask me,â Haley said over the rhythm of her heels striking the hardwood, âhe kissed you for no reason.â
âIâm not asking you.â She angled forward a bit to see the glove Haley held up. âYes, that one. The design matches the bodice. He kissed me because heâs lonely and nostalgic.â
âOh, please,â Haley scoffed as she handed one glove to JoJo. âIâve learned a lot about men since I married, and he kissed you for no reason.â
âWhat world are you living in? Men kiss women all the time for no reason.â
âNot girls like you.â
âWhat is that supposed to mean?â She slid the glove over the poised hand. Girls like her. Was she special? The kind of girl a guy treated differently? Not in her experience. âWhat do you think? I like it.â
Haley stood back to inspect before nodding her approval. âMe too. And Buck kissed you because youâre a woman of substance. The kind a man wants to take home to his mother. How convenient you were already at his motherâs house.
