Ten minutes into the journey and Mungo hasnât said a word. Iâm not inclined to start a conversation. We reach a set of traffic lights on red, and Iâm about to change the radio station when my phone beeps. Still stationary, I quickly glance down at the screen to check whoâs messaged me. Itâs from Chloe: Success! Heâs chatting away! XX
On the one hand, Iâm relieved beyond belief that Finn is at least talking to one of his parents without any third-party interference, but that relief is tinged with envy. Itâs not logical, but I feel cheated that it was Chloeâs actions that started all this, and yet sheâs the one our son sees fit to break his silence with.
âYou appear perturbed,â Mungo comments from the passengerâs seat. âIs there a problem?â
âNot really, no. Chloe just messaged to say Finn is talking to her.â
âThat is good, is it not?â
âYes, obviously.â
âBut you are envious?â
My head snaps to the left. âWhat did you say?â
âI suggested that you are envious.â
âWhat ⦠why on earth would you think that?â
âAm I wrong?â
âDonât answer my question with one of your own. What makes you think Iâm envious?â
âAs I have stated before, my expertise lies in human emotions. I can tell what you are feeling even if you are unwilling to admit it yourself.â
âOr, you guessed and struck lucky. I could have probably drawn the same assumption based on a few facts and a glum expression.â
âIf you prefer to believe that, I understand.â
The traffic lights change, and I return my attention to the road.
âWhy is your relationship with your father complicated?â Mungo then asks.
âIt just is.â
âI understand the word âcomplicatedâ is frequently used to avoid a truthful answer.â
âOr, maybe it really is complicated, and I donât have the energy to explain it.â
âIf you had no choice, could you explain it in one or two sentences?â
âDonât know,â I shrug.
âWould you care to try?â
My first instinct is to say no, but my mind races back to the conversation I had with Chloe this morning. She virtually pleaded with me to make some effort with Mungo. I donât believe itâll do any good, but Iâd rather be proven right than admit I didnât even try.
I puff a deep sigh and consider how I might simplify my relationship with Dad.
âAlright, apart from Chloe and Finn, I donât have any close family other than my dad. So, I put up with his flaky behaviour because ⦠because itâs better to have a crappy dad than no dad at all.â
âBy flaky, do you mean irresponsible and unreliable?â
âExactly that,â I snort. âBoth those words sum Ron Mason up to a tee.â
âI understand.â
Whether he truly understands or not, Mungo remains silent for the remainder of the journey, only speaking again once I pull up outside Dadâs house.
âWe are here?â
âYep.â
âYou will introduce me as a family friend, correct?â
âI suppose so, but are you sure you want to come in?â
âYes.â
âIâll warn you now, my dad isnât renowned for his tact, so donât start bleating if he offends you, okay?â
âI cannot be offended.
