DRAKE
The question sprung from my mouth reflexivelyâlike my mind was grasping onto bits of information about itself. Trying to get a hold of my humanity.
âDrakeâ¦Iâ¦â
But I remembered now. I was a bastard. My father had never claimed me as his. I had been his commander, not his son, and it was a barb that pinched at my soul time and time again.
Bastard was the name for what I really was. I understood it now.
The room suddenly became clear. The walls stood out in stark contrast to the bodies within them. Now not colours, but real living people.
Daxian, my half-brother, I remembered, and Prince Adlain, a human from the Kaalon Kingdom. Next to them wereâ¦Naxon, Ashwood, and Fern. The three princes whose fathers I had killed.
Murdered in cold blood. That explained the glares I was getting.
But it was the woman standing before me whom I only had eyes for.
Her magic was lovingly caressing me, but her emerald eyes, which had been fierce and annoyed a second ago, were filled with something I was not used to seeing. It was an emotion that made my chest clench painfully.
âDrake, Iâm sorry I didnât meanâ¦â
Gods, her voice soothed the wild beast in me. It untangled the mess of vines and branches that was my mind and straightened them out. It was at once bizarre and alluring. I wanted to take her now, thrust myself inside of her and hear her scream my name with pleasure.
I was vaguely aware of someone blasting an attack on the secondary protective shield I had around me and my mateâ
My heart leapt. My mate. She had once been my mate. She had rejected me, but why? Why had she done it?
A memory was burned into the back of my mind. It had been covered by that mess of vines, but her voice swept them aside and showed it to me.
I held her tighter as the vision of me falling into a chasm, her hand outstretched towards me.
âI reject you as my mate.â
Then Iâd changed. And the only thing remaining in my field of vision was her eyes. Not the colour of her actual eyes but the colour of her very being. Wild and powerful, like no one Iâd ever known.
Sheâd wanted to protect me.
Another blast to my shield, but this time, it shattered.
I growled in irritation. This was important. Why was the dark force interrupting me? I was an idiot to shake hands with him, but heâd tricked me. Iâd not been myself at the time. I had been wild. Truly wild.
Abruptly, I let my mate go and turned to look at my real opponent. My real enemy.
I had shaken hands with him. But a contract with a monster like me was moot. I could not be bound by anything.
Not even by the Green Reaper.
Impossibly fast, I lunged for him and was at his side before anyone even knew what was happening. I shoved my hand through his chest, breaking skin and bones and connective tissue, yanking outâ
Nothing.
I frowned as the Reaper staggered backwards a few paces.
